  • Erectile disfunction from st johns worth

So I ve taken this stupid st johns worth pills for 1 week as I read on a website that it might help with erection power. I didn't masturbated since I started taking the pills. This morning I tried masturbating and I can't really get it up. What the hell ? This is supposed to be a plant that acts like a antidepressant, it has to do with serotonin ? I guess, yet it cause me ED

How is this possible ? how long could it last ? I threw the pills away

St. John's Wort has been found to be a suspected cause of sexual dysfunction, but must not very often as it's not listed as a normal side effect. However, it would be very unusual to feel the effect after only one week if you are taking a normal dose. Anyway, normal sexual function returns after discontinued use. Just stop taking it.

It's odd, I know that SSRI can cause sexual disfunction and even permanent, but a plant ?! why ? how does it affect the serotonin so it could affect erection ? it's really weird

Loads of drugs are plant-based. Don't let something being "natural" make you think it's safe or without side-effects. People who over-supplement find this out the hard way. Strychnine is made from "natural" tree seeds, but I don't recommend consuming it! That's an exaggeration, but "natural" supplements usually have some sort of side-effects, sometimes serious, at certain doses or in combination with other supplements, drugs, or pre-existing conditions. Before taking "natural" remedies, review credible literature and don't rely on blog posts or advertisements.

Here's the mechanism of action for St. John's Wort: inhibition of the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT), dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE) in the synaptic cleft, binding to the GABA-A and GABA-B receptors thereby inhibiting the binding of GABA ligands, increasing the density of 5-HT2 receptors in the frontal cortex of the brain, and inhibition of both monamine oxidase (MAO) and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) enzymes in the brain thereby allowing more DA to be converted to NE.

If you can understand all that you wouldn't have needed to make your original post.
