  • Tore my front deltoid

I was benchpressing this morning and while pushing the bar up I felt and heard something rip like paper in my shoulder. I immediately bailed and dropped the weight (this is why you use a spotter ). Afterwords my shoulder mobility diminished to pain. Towards the end of the day it became a dull pain, beige if I were to put a color to it, and I can't move it without it hurting.

Now, I obviously know something is wrong, I have an appointment scheduled already. But what could it be? Is it 100% some torn muscle? But is it torn muscle, or muscle torn from the bone? I'm so curious as to how I'll recover. People told me I'm out of the lifting game forever, and others told me I'd need muscle relaxant and rest and I'd be good. No way I'd leave it just to their opinions, but I'm curious to inquire to the all knowledgeable penis forums.

I warmed up running a little, and doing a couple one reps to get my technique ready, and I jumped up to set a new personal record. For anyone interested I weigh 155 pounds, and I was attempting 240 when this happened (which was going up smoothly). This wasn't over zealous since I've done 235 one rep, and 225 three times.

    What do you all think?

This *could* be a really big deal...or it could just be an injury that will heal.

Ram down some L Glutamine and go see a doctor..

Yeah man it's hard to say. I did the same thing, but did it unracking the weight on incline. Did it a few months ago and it still hurts because I never got it taken care of. Deff get it checked out and if he says take time off then do it. I regret it.

Thanks for the insight into your experience, I'm glad I scheduled an appointment right away. I suppose I'll relay the information here after for anyone viewing the thread wondering for themselves.

Ive done somthing to my sholder to, but i was playing football.I went to the doc and he culdnt do anything for me, he even took x rays but never called me for the results, i just let it heal naturally and kept it imobalized as much as possible, but somtime when im training the pain comes back and i just sorta shke it off but it can get pretty bad somtimes.
My advice would be to not use it at all or at least as little as possible and ice and heat it in 20 min intervals, going to see a doc is a good ideq ( as long as he give you the results, not like my asshole doc)

I think 240lbs is an impressive bench for anyone but for someone who weighs 155 it is rediculous! Nice!!

Oh - about your shoulder? Fucking take forever to heal them shoulders. Sucks to be you.

There are a few assessments your PCP will perform to assess the localization and degree of the injury. Immediately, I'm curious... any inflammation of the region surrounding the deltiod / area that this injury occured? Discoloration of the skin? can you describe the pain? Burning? Stinging? Tearing? Tightness? etc... etc... 20 different terms to define pain.

I'm curious how limited your ROM (range of motion) is... it's understandable that it may be a tendon tear... or sprain (partial tear)... a strain would be a pull / elongation of the tendon.

As long as it isn't a ligament... ligaments have more of a plasticity response to overuse and stretching... tendons and muscles have an elasticity effect.. think of a rubber band vs. a soda can 6 pack holder (plastic)...

anyhow.. to me it sounds like the golgi tendon apparatus in the tendon (that connects at the point of insertion on the muscle) may have been hyper extended causing that 'tearing' sensation and sharp pain that dulled, but is still prevalent.

I'm a physiologist, not an Md or DPT... so my knowledge is limited, but the BEST thing I would recommend is... SEE YOUR PCP (Primary Care Phys) immediately and definitely immobilize your arm as BEST you can. Ice it... vasoconstrict IF it's inflammed... otherwise apply a moderate heat + ice. allow the wound to heal itself...

ahh... the magic and beauty of the body's immuno-response... all those leukocytes and macrophages pouring into the SOI (site of injury) ... =)

So just an update. I went to the doctors today. I have a tear in my rotator cuff, the part directly under my front deltoid. 8hours or so after the injury, I couldn't move my shoulder at all without pain. Two nights later, I'm able to carefully put my hands behind my head, put my hands behind my back, and go to about a 40 degree angle laterally. But as I watch myself do this in the mirror I can tell my shoulder is crunching up like I'm shrugging whenever I attempt those motions. So the movement isn't clean and perhaps I'm engaging other muscles--but it's progress.

So anyways, the doc, examining my ROM, commented 'oh it's that bad?', which startled me because of my recent progress in mobility. I'm booked to get an ultrasound and xray done, and for some rehabilitation. I'm convinced I'll recover beautifully after some icing I did today. It felt great, and to be honest I wasn't convinced it was swollen underneath until after.

Dante, you told me to keep it as immobilized as possible as others did. I read somewhere that I should not, because if I did I'd risk getting a "frozen shoulder". What are your thoughts, guys? I've been keeping it still but I've tested my ROM throughout my day, is this wrong of me?

I don't know if you guys are aware but I'm not looking to recover, I'm looking to excel. I want to strengthen my shoulders, get back in the lifting game and show the weights that they can't clip my wing, and I'll fly till I die. Powerlifting is a fascination of mine, and I will push forward. As I ice myself, I meditate on my shoulder strengthening, and I fathom about how great it'll feel when I step into the gym again, to lift weights. I will get there.

I've regained the majority of my mobility but there is pain associated with some movements. I'm getting an ultrasound/xray done soon.

thats why bench presses should be done powerlifting style while keeping the shoulders tucked in the sockets....

Truth. I've learned the hard way. I just wish "bodybuilder" bullshit wasn't everywhere and wasn't my only source of information, with their 700g of protein a day and their horrible form--somethings just don't work well unless you're on steroids.
