  • Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet might be the origin of the gluten free craze going on, but it goes far beyond "gluten free". Many people will consider the Paleo diet extreme or another name for the Atkin's diet. While the macro nutrient profile is similar, it goes far beyond Atkin's.

The Paleo diet calls for eating whole foods that our hunter gatherer ancestors would have eaten. The main revelation is that grain and wheat products are not a part of this. If you think of the traditional food pyramid, you've basically eliminated the bottom layer. You're left with fruits, vegetables, and meat; dairy is the controvertial cousin of meat.

The science of the diet has everything to do with how insulin reacts to our foods we eat.

As for some anecdotal evidence; I've been eating Paleo (with the exception of some football day beers) for about eight weeks. This coincided with me getting a job, that has severely limited my time for working out. Previous to the job I was running about 15 miles a week. At that point I was just under 200lbs. After eight weeks on Paleo and without any running I've been consistently at 193lbs. If I picked up a fitness routine once again I'm very confident the diet could take me there, whichever way I want to go.

Finally, this is a 3 part series of A. Scott Connelly talking about how the body reacts to insulin. Some very compelling stuff in there if you have 90 minutes or so, it's definitely worth it.

Anything behind this or just a blanket statement. I could easily imagine eliminating vegetables and putting on weight.

Yeah I had a good friend that did this. He also didn't believe in cooking his food. He even eventually got to where he was eating his meat raw, which was hard.

He said that raw FRESH tuna was the easiest to eat raw. The reason for eating meat raw, or as raw as you can get it, is because of how the colloidal structure changes when cooking it, which is what makes it hard to digest and hard on the digestive tract. Its like how an egg changes from its raw state to a cooked state.

I remember hearing about a story of a guy who wanted to go study the Eskimos. Well, there was no way for them to fly in food so he had to eat RAW seal meat because that's all the Eskimos HAD to eat. Why raw when they had fires? CONSTIPATION!!! If all you it is meat, and you cook it, you will be corked up so bad you won't be able to shit for a week (maybe more).

Well they had to do an emergency evacuation of the guys since he just HAD to cook his meat.

I do have to admit it took me four days to pass my first movement once I started the diet. Now I'm once a day consistently, so no worries.

The anticipation was much worse than the result, surprisingly painless. I think there is just less waste product in fruits, vegetables, and meats.
