The Paleo diet might be the origin of the gluten free craze going on, but it goes far beyond "gluten free". Many people will consider the Paleo diet extreme or another name for the Atkin's diet. While the macro nutrient profile is similar, it goes far beyond Atkin's.
The Paleo diet calls for eating whole foods that our hunter gatherer ancestors would have eaten. The main revelation is that grain and wheat products are not a part of this. If you think of the traditional food pyramid, you've basically eliminated the bottom layer. You're left with fruits, vegetables, and meat; dairy is the controvertial cousin of meat.
The science of the diet has everything to do with how insulin reacts to our foods we eat.
As for some anecdotal evidence; I've been eating Paleo (with the exception of some football day beers) for about eight weeks. This coincided with me getting a job, that has severely limited my time for working out. Previous to the job I was running about 15 miles a week. At that point I was just under 200lbs. After eight weeks on Paleo and without any running I've been consistently at 193lbs. If I picked up a fitness routine once again I'm very confident the diet could take me there, whichever way I want to go.

Finally, this is a 3 part series of A. Scott Connelly talking about how the body reacts to insulin. Some very compelling stuff in there if you have 90 minutes or so, it's definitely worth it.
