the hardest part is knowing what to do, once you recognize exactly what steps it takes, it becomes much easier. even if you only do half of the intensity of this routine you will see great results. but follow this routine exactly and you sill see serious results fast. i mean like in a 2 months your abs will be showing and you'll gain 10 pounds to your upper body.
this is actually the routine i've been using. i formulated this after lots of trial and error when i was young, then through lots of research on the internet. i took a two or three years off from the gym and when i decided to get back in shape, i decided to do it as fast as possible, with the least amount of wasted effort. i wrote myself a solid diet and workout plan based on all my research, and wrote it all out for myself in charts. when i finally hit the gym for the first time since college i came prepared.
In the middle of October i was 5'9 and 143 pounds, 4% bodyfat tops. i weighed more before, but i was doing an intense bodyweight routine that got me cut and stronger, but didn't give me the gains i was looking for. I joined the gym and started this program towards the end of october and now i weight 158, with maybe 7% bodyfat. i can't see my six pack when i go to sleep, but when i wake up in the morning or don't eat much for a day its like whoa. my shirts feel tight in the shoulders, and i measured an extra 3/4 of an inch on my bicep.
Read the supplement thread also - there are several that would speed your progress.
Good luck man! remember its not important to do it perfectly. its just important to try as hard as you can.The force is strong with you young Skywalker. Obi Wan has trained you well.

Serious, efficient mass / strength gains are going to come from eating a lot and moving heavy stuff. You eat, lift, and get fat. Then you stop eating as much and keep lifting till you are skinny. Repeat. The cornerstones of packing on muscle are going to be the squat, deadlift, and benchpress. There are tons of other exercises to help balance your body out and keep it well proportioned, but these are the most important. I understand going to the gym can be uncomfortable at first, but to do squats safely at home, well, it ain't cheap. You can do it, but expect to spend ~$800 for a power rack / weights / etc for entry level stuff. This does also allow you to do bench presses without accidentally crushing yourself as well, but, at the price of a couple years gym membership.

^^^ Tons of useful information in that.
If you don't care about filling out a t-shirt, and just wanna lose weight / be in better shape? Start running or swimming

Good deal on your decision to improve your health.
lots of good advice above.
I'll offer a simpler course for you to consider.
Do P90X (Yes, from the infomercial and no, I don't sell it)
But it is a really good starting point for working out, especially if you're young and not a 65 year old morbidly obese wreck.
I have been rather athletic all my life but middle age wore me down a bit and I quit smoking and put on 45 pounds.
I started doing p90x (no real thought involved since it is all set out for you) and It has worked out well for me. Ny body fat percentage had gone from 37% (yikes) to below 25% and I've dropped about 25 pounds so far...not too shabby for two months effort.
It is a great intro to training and it really does work---I sound like a commercial here.
My only advice for p90x and any training is
a. Warm up and stretch well before working out and
b. Pay attention to your form.
Ignore either of those and you can very easily injure yourself.
Best of luck
