Are there any members who take probiotics? I am investigating whether I need to take them or not.

I take Acidophilus every day right after breakfast.
Putting good bacteria back into your gut does wonders for:
    Digestion
    Colon health
    Your immune system
Is the same live culture found in Yogurt.

Look for a brand that contains "live culture" and must be
    refrigerated after opening. (jP

P.S. I use a brand called "Natures Bounty"

I'm there with JonPop, acidophilius every other day with active yogurt. Europe has been doing the probiotics for years. It's just now becoming a bigger marketing ploy in America. None the less A lot of the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium can really help the GI tract stay healthy and I do so hate GI grief.

        I'm taking two currently:
One contains Saccharomyces Boulardii, a yeast that seems to be recommended mostly to reduce diarrhoea, but I heard it was good at pushing badguys out of the gut so am giving it a go.
The second one is a combination of acidophilus and bifidobacterium and some herb extracts, the first dose gave me an upset stomach, but now for whatever reason I have no problem with it - Hopefully that's a good sign

They're both freeze-dried and claim not to need refrigeration, Optibac brand (UK) if anyone is interested.

There was one brand that contained soil organisms which had lots of positive reviews, perhaps suspiciously so, but I read that they hadn't been studied much and some unsubstantiated claims that the spores could get out of control and were near impossible to kill - I decided to stick with the better studied varieties instead.

One note: most of the probiotics off the shelf will not survive long inside of you and that is why you must take them everyday. I have taken probiotics with considerable success though I now look for the word "Survivable" (or similar) on the label. I don't want to take them forever.

Thanks, Pirate! Thanks guys. I do bloat a lot, but I also eat lots of yogurt. I know as you grow older you don't absorb food as well, so from what I have read, one needs more nutrients, not fewer, as one reaches my age--70's. I watched this woman on P.B.S. and she made a lot of sense. Of course, I also know that she wants to make a buck. Don't we all? I just have to wade through the good ole American "fast sell," and get to the bottom of this.

            Thanks again.

Not yet, Pirate. I'll let you know after I get on one of these formulas. I do have some figures the woman on PBS shared with the public. I'll post them later.

Higher quality probiotics need to be refrigerated, and you will find them in most grocery stores in the health section that is refrigerated, however if you don't want to spend that much money you can get one's off the shelf that work well, just be sure to only buy those in a gel cap form... no hard tablets.
A quality digestive enzyme is essential too. Add in your Omega 3,6,9's and you will have optimal digestive health, which is the key to eliminating a host of health problems!

Me, I'm as regular as the sunrise...Get up, have a cup of coffee and go have a sit down. Very rare that I am off schedule except when I am traveling. Something about crapping in a strange bathroom that rubs me wrong. Anyway, my wife is hit or miss. Some days she will go 3 times, other times she will go days between sit downs. She tried Probiotics - Did nothing but bloat her to the point that I thought she was going to burst. Switched to the other kind of probiotic thinking it was the lactose intolerance. Same thing, nothing but bloat. Now, when relief is needed, good ole Milk of Magnesia does the trick.

Side note, she also learned the hard way that a single dose of M of M is sufficient and to be patient. She took a 2nd dose when impatient once and spent the next 6 hrs on the can trying to set the record for the most consecutive craps in a row. I felt sorry for her, but reminded her it was her own impatience that brought it on.
