As I mentioned I have been an all time natural. I have used many supplements trying to compensate for not using steroids. In this thread I will mention many tricks of the supplement industry.
EPISODE 1 - WEIGHT GAINERS
I chose to write about weight gainers first because that was my first supplement. Weight gainers helped me because I was literally a noodle. I remember how happy I was when I gained my first few pounds. At that moment I was bitten by the iron bug. With weight gainers I noticed the first "lie" or "half-truth". Their labels present humongous amounts of calories and obviously I began looking for the highest number. Then I noticed that those numbers were calories PER SERVING and that sometimes you need a shovel to get a "serving". For example in Muscletech Mass Tech Extreme 2000 the serving for those 2000 calories is 570 grams. That is 1.25 pounds!!! They recommend to mix it with 20 oz of water or milk. There is no way you can mix 1.25 pounds of powder in 20 oz of liquid. You would need a spoon to consume it. For other gainers a serving is almost the whole container mixed with other things. For Vitol Russian Bear 5000 a serving is 635 grams (1.4 pounds) mixed with one gallon of milk. For Universal Nutrition Gain Fast 3100 if you want those 3100 calories you need to mix 5 scoops (229 grams) of Gain Fast along with 2 large bananas, 2 cups of oats, 6 tablespoons of peanut butter, 6 egg whites, 2 cups of low fat ice cream along w/ 32oz. of skim milk. I remember one day I decided to calculate the calories per gram of different weight gainers to see once and for all which one was better. To my surprise all were pretty much the same. It is obvious, since carbohydrates and protein both have 4 calories per gram the only way x grams of gainer A can have more calories than x grams of gainer B is increasing the amount of fat, and no company want to have the product with the highest amount of fat.

That time (the Golden Age of bodybuilding) is where a lot of progress was made as regards nutrition. It was thought the heavy cream facilitated controlled, maximum absorption of the ingredients- not to mention having lots of calories.
