  • Did you know cigarettes are radioactive?

If you didn't think you should quit smoking before reading this, you will afterward.

    Big Tobacco Hid Cancer Studies

In 1998, a legal settlement forced the release of dozens
of previously unexamined tobacco industry documents that
revealed that the tobacco industry knew of the potential lung
cancer risk from radioactivity from tobacco as early as the late
1950s. This week, a study from UCLA shows that more than forty
years ago, tobacco companies deliberately prevented the release
of findings about radioactivity in tobacco (Nicotine & Tobacco
Research, published online September 27, 2011).
Hrayr S. Karagueuzian, the first author of the study
states: "They knew that the cigarette smoke was radioactive way
back then and that it could potentially result in cancer, and
they deliberately kept that information under wraps,"
Science Daily (September 28, 2011) interviewed the
authors and quoted them as saying: "Radioactive polonium-210 was
found in all commercially available domestic and foreign
cigarette brands. It is absorbed by tobacco leaves through
naturally occurring radon gas in the atmosphere and through
high-phosphate chemical fertilizers used by tobacco growers. The
substance is eventually inhaled by smokers into the lungs. The
estimated radiation absorbed dose by regular smokers over a 20-
or 25-year period equaled 40 to 50 rads, which is equal to 120
to 138 deaths per 1,000 regular smokers over a 25-year period."
"Despite the potential risk of lung cancer, tobacco
companies declined to adopt a technique discovered in 1959 and
then another developed in 1980 that could have helped eliminate
polonium-210 from tobacco, the researchers said. The 1980
technique, known as an acid-wash, was found to be highly
effective in removing the radioisotope from tobacco plants,
where it forms a water-insoluble complex with the sticky, hair-
like structures called trichomes that cover the leaves."
"The industry was concerned that the acid media would
ionize the nicotine, making it more difficult to be absorbed
into the brains of smokers and depriving them of that instant
nicotine rush that fuels their addiction."

Did you know that our bodies are also radioactive? How about smoke detectors? Clay pottery, credit cards, nearly any electronic device you have, flying in a plane, driving in a car...

Hell, there is not a spot on earth that does not have radiation. Cigarettes, just like bananas, will kill you from other means long before you even get anywhere close to a relatively safe level of radiation poisoning that's barely enough to show up in lab work.

DemOne, you've clearly missed the point. Of course radiation is everywhere, but Polonium 210 isn't found everywhere, and you certainly don't want to introduce it into your body if you respect yourself.

Nah, but it could put you in a grave earlier than you want to be.

Oh, I know about Polonium 210. It's one of my favorite elements for it's radioactive properties. If anyone is so worried about Polonium 210, just buy a pack of cigs that's older than 270 days. Then you only have to worry about lead being in there, which again is almost everywhere. The half life of Polonium 210 in a biological body being about 30 days.

The amount of Polonium 210 in a single cigarette is tiny. So tiny, there's no chance that it's going to kill you, or even make you sick. You'd die from Oxygen deprivation long before you've smoked enough cigarettes to have an effect from the Polonium 210. If it was such a big issue, the FDA would have forbid the sale of cigarettes a long time ago. If an entire cigarette factory does not contain enough Polonium 210 to warrant special Alpha radiation protection, those who smoke it are of in no danger from it.

The same Polonium 210 that's in cigarettes is also in damn near anything you buy in the produce section at a grocery store or farmers market. Yes, Polonium 210 even in massively small doses is bad, but the Polonium 210 content in Tobacco (or any other crop that is grown in soil) is just tiny.

Now, I'm against smoking, but the radioactive isotope content of cigarettes is the least of anyone's worries of smoking them. There are much much larger doses of other toxic substances found in cigarettes.

There are studies that show tobacco is good for health. It helps with stress and with blood circulation. But it has to be grown organically and in good soil. The tobacco used in Marlboro and other big tobacco companies is the bottom of barrel shit. Here are some articles:

Yes, but it sucks when you have to go to a funeral of a family member who died early from years of smoking.

Smoking doesn't kill you. Unless you took a really, really, really big drag.

The most deaths around smoking has to due with chain smokers (over a pack a day) and the secondary smoke from it lingering in the house. Major companies (except a few like American Spirit) use chemically induced soil including pesticides but it is the tar as well that are put into cigarettes (which keeps the tobacco burning) that play a major factor in the deaths.
