  • Whey protein, casein protein and milk

Hi guys, this are just some quick question.

I'm recovering from a shoulder injury(surgery 3 months ago), and now i have to exercise ang gain some muscle mass, this is part of my recovery. I have lactose intolerance, milk just make me feel really bad and sick but i have read about whey and casein protein and how good protein source it is, so i'm wondering if this kind of product have elements of milk or if it's just the isolated protein. I don't wanna feel sick taking whey or casein protein and waste my money. Also which has the most aminoacids?

    thx 4 your time. Greetings.

Edit: Also i'm worried about testoterone and estrogen, could soy protein be a good protein source without involving estrogen?

I would avoid the soy... there's lots better sources anyway even if you're not worried about the oestrogens...
If you have lactose intolerance, you could try lactase - it's a supplemental enzyme that helps you digest milk. Or you could try yogurt/cheese which a lot of lactose-intolerant people can handle without trouble.
Thing is, milk being a liquid, it's easier to get a lot of quantity in compared to solid protein.
Depending on the brand, most whey/casein protein would be protein isolates/hydrosylates, and lactose free. Still, read the label for details before buying.
Whey is great if you want to get amino acids into your bloodstream fast, but the problem is they also leave it pretty fast. Supposedly also tends to promote burning protein for energy instead of carbs or fat, not so great.
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard is a pretty top-of-the-line whey, with several grams of BCAAs added per scoop. I guess that's what you meant by amino acids, as all protein is amino acids.

Eggs are pretty close to perfect protein, having the highest Biological Value of all foods. Any other animal protein is mostly perfect protein, as in it has all the essential amino acids. Basically, what I mean is, you're not limited to whey and casein for protein sources.

Still, I would highly recommend trying lactase, as whole milk works a lot better than whey and casein in isolation, plus its pretty loaded with BCAAs in itself, along with lots of vitamins and minerals - can you say calcium? If it helps you digest milk, your problem is solved right there.

Thank you very much for the reply, i think i'm gonna try egg protein. i forgot to metion that i'm a vegetarian (for health issues, still on the path of learning and testing about it. Tasty Tidbits and Dastardly Dietary Dogma) and i have tried a lot of milk products (a lot), they all gives me cramps. i still sometimes eat eggs (not fried). The thing about the protein is only because i want to gain muscle mass "quick" to accelerate mi recovery, the doc said 6 months full recovery (besides i'm not into the "bulk" look, just fit). i feel better than ever, just need a little help.

Thank you very much again (= . Greetings.

        No worries.

I'm a vegetarian too, more accurately a lacto-ovo-vegetarian. Luckily, no problem for me digesting milk.

Anyway, something else... I'm not a big believer in having to go very high in protein intake in order to bulk up. I've put on over 30 kilos of bodyweight before I could afford protein powders and creatine, etc, mostly through nutrient timing. I use protein shakes now just because it's an easy and fast way to get some nutrition in.

This is how it worked for me when first bulking up - six eggs first thing morning, six eggs and half a litre of milk evenings, carbs through the rest of the day, especially before and after workouts. Carbs were mostly pasta, potatoes, sweet potatoes, whole-wheat bread and bananas. Post workout was a glucose drink.

Thanks. The thing is i'm really skinny right now ( 64kg - 185cm) because i couldn't exercise for almost 7 months, and now i have to exercise and lift weights, but no more than 2kg (3-4kgs next month and so on)and very light routines. Can't work with my body weight (no pull-ups, push-ups etc) till next month. It seems that with a good amount of eggs and legume i'm gonna be fine. Greetings.

I'm a vegetarian too. Increasing protein consumption is always on my list of things to do. I am VERY lean, very cut.

Find something called Quinoa. It is a grain containing whole proteins. As a vegetarian, you'll probably know that finding a source of protein with all the essential amino acids can be difficult. For the longest time, I didn't eat eggs. I'm thinking of taking them out of my diet again. Quinoa is a food I will need to incorporate.
It's great because it can go with almost any other food, has all the proteins and the carbs I need.

Beans are also really good. I get them dried, soak them over night and then cook them. I don't want the preservatives that they add to canned beans.

I made a thread for people to post up vegetarian recipes, but people took it as an opportunity to question vegetarian lifestyle and no one put up any recipes. ):

I like to cook. We should make a vegetarian group and post some dishes.

You can buy low lactose or lactose free protein powders since both casein and whey protein are milk byproducts.

Also, if you don't have money to purchase a tub of protein powder - Parmesan cheese is mostly Whey protein as are many hard cheeses. It also isn't as bad on lactose intolerant people; add it to your meals to get a boost in protein.

Farts would be a symptom of lactose intolerance... never had that problem with whey protein or whole milk for that matter
