  • If you want to build muscle or stay fit, say goodbye to drinking..

So im here to try to give you guys some knowledge on why alcohol and working out done mix.

First off if you didnt know alcohol is a dietetic, which means it makes your body get rid of the water in your body. Thats why you pee a lot when you drink. This is bad for your body/muscles because your body is made up of mostly water and you cant grow or recover as well when you're dehydrated, lacking electrolytes and nutrients.

Alcohol has a lot of empty calories in it. Which means you're consuming a bunch of calories with no nutrition in them, which results in fat storage. There is 7 calories in 1 gram of alcohol, so if you have one 1.5oz shot of 80 proof vodka you just consumed 100 empty calories.

Alcohol slows down protein synthesis. There are several reasons why it does this. For one, it dehydrates your muscle cells. Hydrated and even over hydrated muscles allows for a much higher anabolic environment. Because your cells aren't holding as much water, it becomes much harder to build muscle. The second reason why alcohol can severely hurt muscle growth is because it blocks the absorption of many important nutrients that are key to muscle contraction, relaxation and growth including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and potassium.

Alcohol slows down glycogen metabolism. Glycogen is basically a wad of glucose (sugar). This means you aren't using the sugar in your body for fuel which means you essentially store it, resulting in fat storage.

Alcohol disrupts your sleep. People think alcohol makes them sleep better but its actually the opposite. Alcohol prevents you from getting into that deep sleep cycle. That deep sleep cycle is where your body really rests and recovers and rebuilds your muscles. So if you aren't sleeping well you aren't recovering well.

This last one is a big one. ALCOHOL LOWERS TESTOSTERONE AND INCREASES ESTROGEN. When you drink your test. levels go down by 25%. I dont need to explain why this is a bad thing. This is why you often see heavy drinkers with "man boobs", low test. and high estrogen.

So after telling you all of this my advise to you is that if you want to get serious about being fit or gaining muscle, dont drink alcohol on days you workout. Dont drink the day after you workout because thats when your body is recovering, and dont drink the day before you are planning on working out.

Now one drink here or there is going to have minimal effects on you, but id avoid heavy drink if you want to get the most out of your workout. If you are you might as well not workout because you're just wasting all your hard work you put in.

It is not good for you but in moderation one can drink and do well with working out. I do mean actual moderation though. When I was in more serious working out phases of my life I would not drink more than once a week.

Ive been thinking about this alot recently, its almost impossible for me to quit drinking, i would have no social life, and i dont wanna live as a monk. but i want to be fit. In a article i read, it said swap beer for red wine, because beer raises estrogen in the body. I cant drink redwine with the boys, il get ridiculed. to fuck. What about cider, this any better? or maybe switching to beer bottles instead of drinking pints?

This is why I personally chose to drink one day a week. I could have a night out but 6 days of good hard training. I dont drink hardly ever any more.
I dont think any hobby should take over your life completely but to make good gains with weight training or to advance in any form of conditioning you will have to prioritize things. I know all in all C-van is correct about the booze being no good for building muscle. I would say no days of drinking is best but if your going to then take one day and get it out of your system because a little 3 or 4 times a week is no good, I would wrather have one garbage day a week, eat and drink it up, have fun and then get back at it hard on Monday. I always worked out Monday thru saturday, partied saturday night then used sunday to rest. Of course I was just going for stregth so I wasnt doing the whole body builder regimen, if i was I would have probably cut the booze altogether.

Yes no drinking at all would be best, but if not try to keep it in moderation.

Ill drink about once every few weeks and when i do i try not to get too drunk or drink too much. It take a few days if not a week for your body to fully recover from drinking hard.

Diuretic: Anything that promotes the formation of urine by the kidney. (The word "diuretic" comes from a combination of the Greek "dia-", thoroughly + "ourein", to urinate = to urinate thoroughly).
