  • Question for runners. Day vs. night

Is there any reason why I am able to run further at night than I am during the day? The past two days that I've gone for a run it's been at night between 23:30 and 24:00 and have managed 5k quite easily. During the day (around noon) I'm lucky if I can manage 2k-2.5k. For my run tonight it was 74* and 100% relative humidity, but not raining, so I'm not thinking that it's due to the weather at all since it's usually close to those temps during the day.

Could this just be due to my biological clock? I usually go to bed around 02:00 so I have no idea if I'd just be more energized a few hours before bed rather than about 3-4 hours after waking up.

I also find it is easier to run at night, due to the temperature differential and lack of sunlight, I don't sweat as much which means that I retain more fluids

It could also be related to energy levels and your previous meal, if you run at noon you will have only eaten breakfast a few hours beforehand and breakfast presumably wouldn't provide as many calories as your dinner which is what you would have eaten before running at night

Night air is cooler, thus more dense. It is logical to assume that denser air contains more oxygen.

My running glory days are over (wore my joints out over the decades), but I definitely found nighttime running to be much more productive.

I could understand that being the case if it hasn't been basically the same temp all day and all night.

Hey Demone, just curious but you dont happen to be in or around the Bay Area in CA?...... Because in the last week or so the weather here seems to be perfect for running or cycling anytime of the night or even early morning. Strong cool winds duriing the day with abundant sunshine. Temps are low 70's, humidity in the 60-70 range and no rain in the forecast. Maybe its the low level humidity for this part of the world, but I feel energized during the day and most importantly need less sleep at night. I usually hit the sack at around 11.45pm most nights. Funny thing is that I think I could manage a second cardio workout even before going to bed. That is after a five mile run in the evening.

Hell if I know. It's rained the past 8 nights or so.

              Florida.

I usually feel like I could do another 5k immediately after, but once I hit the 3k mark the last 2k are just bothersome since I get bored easily.
