  • Can protein shakes be dangerous?

Are there any negative factors that come with drinking protein shakes?

Apparently they can cause liver problems, to counteract any damage they can cause its advised to drink an equal amount of water to protein drink.

You can damage your liver I think from drinking too much. Like say if you do nothing... and drink 20 protein shakes a day... your body is having so much excess unused protein... its the same as binge drinking really... Also if you have protein shakes that have negative ingredients then yeah but generally speaking..... NO

Good to know this!! I use ON brand,,,,,I did research quite a few years back and weeded out the brands. The first thing I learned was that the EAS stuff is not so healthy for you,,,,,its the stuff they carry in SAMS CLUB and other bulk suppliers. :-)

The more protein you have the more you increase your chances of kidney stones
            Going for that boing factor.

There was a study done in France that suggests that Whey Protein causes an excess of semen to build up in men and if it goes on too long that it can actually cause infertility. I would link this, but I don't know where to find it and it's all in French. I read it for French class like... 6 years ago.
              Focus on the positive :D

WillyWackers explanation is a little better than mine....I have my own personal battle on the use of protein drinks and possible health related problems associated with they're use...Main problem psoriasis

I was probably getting around 150 grams of protein a day from shakes and tuna/chicken....and being 13.5 stone with 8% bodyfat ( I'm 5'.6") I needed a fair bit but never that much...was not drinking water though...I did allot of research which lead me to start drinking more other fluids water or redbush tea ( redush tea is amazing look it up if you've never had it)....Most of my health issues subsided and my psoriasis is almost in remission.....Unfortunately I had to give up the shakes and working out ....and lost 3 stones of muscle

Wow, didn't expect this much response

So basically: drink 2-3 liters of water per day to counteract the liver problems? And how can you prevent psoriasis?

I drink 2 shakes a day, gives me 70 grams of protein .. I weigh like 160 pounds so I need the same amount of proteins a day?

Depending on the size of your bladder 2-3 liters of fluids could be to much fluid, I've read many scientific documents that claim humans need no where near this much fluid intake

My advice would be to get your protein from nuts and chicken/tuna instead of the shakes...but if you gotta take the shakes then yeah drink and equal amount of water

My psoriasis is hereditary and using to much protein drinks exasperated the problem...if psoriasis runs in your family then there's a higher chance of you getting it if you don't eat well and consume to many man made products

You'll be fine in like 70 grams is enough or you're doing good drinking 2 protein shakes and get some more protein from food sources?

I used to drink protein shakes but to much carbs in them, now I drink eggwhites, 1 of the half size containers of All Whites is 50g of protein no carbs!

People thinks its nasty but its not its just like drink milk, no taste really imo

Well, you should be getting 1g of protein per pound of lean bodyweight, so you'll need more protein than that. But you'll get the extra protein from diet fairly easily.

Just saying that you really have nothing to worry about health wise from taking protein shakes.
