  • Smoothies at my school

At my school they sell smoothies from the brand "mysmoothie" .. Would it be healthy to drink one daily or is it just a load of boggus? (They always say it contains 100% fruit etc...)

One smoothie has 70 kcal and 10 grams of carbs (sugar), no protein or fats ..

I'm just wondering if I get all the vitamins/minerals/antioxidants from the fruits I consume in the smoothie.

Bad idea. It's just a lot of fruit juice and SUGAR without any real substance. And the way it has to be cooked when it's packaged, it ends up killing a lot of the more sensitive vitamins.

You'd be better off eating a small apple instead.

Do you have any proof of that?

Thanks for the answer. I also red that about orange juice .. So I was kind of skeptic, but perhaps it's better than nothing drinking such a smoothy .. + 10 grams of sugar isn't that dramatic..

They're quite easy to make yourself with a hand held blender. That way you know exactly what's in it and it's way cheaper, especially if you buy fruit that's in season.

If I have to make them myself I need to clean the blender that's always such a pain in the ass + My mom would go buy me some fruit everyday etc .. Too much work. (still student so I don't have a lot of money) ..

I know this place called fresh 'n juice where they blend fresh fruit, but those smoothies cost like 5 euros.. That's a lot to pay everyday ..

I was just wondering if it's any good for health in terms of vitamins/minerals/antioxidants .. + fruit also expires quickly fresh fruit that is..

If you use a hand held blender you just stick the blade bit under the tap for 5 seconds and it's clean, drink the smoothie straight from the beaker you blended it in. Done in 5 minutes.

Dude, have your mom buy a bullet blender, and bags of assorted frozen fruit. You can pick up both at Walmart. The fruit normally last me about 2-3 months and the blender is extremely easy to clean. I just wash it out with warm water daily and with soap once a week. For the juice I use a Naked juice pack (supposedly this is much fresher than other processed juices) that I pickup from Costco every 2 weeks, but you can use whatever juice you like (I'll also recommend the soy juice proteins you can usually find in the soy milk section).

Been to a "Zest juice bar" today .. They make smoothies on the spot with frozen fruits. I took a powerberry smoothy containing cranberries, strawberries, acai berries, etc.. They claim it to be fresh and they make it while you watch it going into the blender. They then poor it into a bottle of 50cl.

It costs around 5 euros.. I think this is pretty expensive.. But I was thinking to buy me 2 of those bottles every week and drink 25cl a day .. That way I get "fresh and healthy" fruits (and vegetables) 4 days in a row for sure .. On other days I eat bananas and pineapples.

My problem is on their site they say "some smoothies contain even 20 strawberries, 40 blablabla,.." I drank the berry smoothie and it was very sour. They don't add any artificial sweeteners or sugar btw ..

Doesn't these smoothies contain loads of sugar? Is this healthy and worth the investment?

They also have a superdetox smoothie for example that contains broccoli, spirulina, celery, apples, etc...

Just make one yourself from fresh fruits or eat an apple like previously said.

I was just wondering if this would be a good alternative next to eating 2-3 fruits a day .. With a smoothie you can get way more different kind of fruits and vitamins then eating regular fruits (although regular fruits are better to eat) ..

I don't want my mom to run to the store everyday and I don't want her to buy me a monthsupply of fruits .. So is this a good alternative? All the food is frozen (wich is a good thing right?) and it's just mixed in a blender .. I believe it's healthy, I'm just concerned about the sugars (that you get anyways if you eat the fruits apart and not mixed) ..

It would be an easy and convenient way for me to get my daily intake of fruits and vegetables.

That could be too much fructose.

Are you eating that many fruits only for health reason?

I would suggest eating berries if you can.

Make sure you also eat slow absorbing carbs like oatmeal, yams, sweet potato, brown rise etc.

It sounds very healthy. I saw the food was all frozen so I suppose all the vitamins and minerals are still in it .. I eat pretty clean but I just wanted to add some more fruits and vegetables to my diet .. Almost all excellent diets contain lots of fruits and veggies.

Lol, there's no such thing as a necessary "detox". Your liver and kidneys are always detoxifying your blood and cleaning up your system. But sadly people use that term to sell snake oil treatments and extensive fasting regimes that are often not needed if your diet is in check.... And I'm talking real food and not juices or pills.

Try your smoothies for a month and see how you feel (energy, mental alertness and weight wise), if all is positive then no harm no foul, but if you feel sluggish, bloated and gain weight, then I think eating fresh fruit and veggies daily would be better. Good luck and let us know what happens.
