For pleasure: "The Blue Sky": Fictional story of a Mongolian boy in the mountains recalling his life events in his village.

"Altered Carbon" set in the year 2,500, humans have found a way to "digitize" the soul and implant to synthetic or otherwise formerly dead bodies, essentially allowing people to live forever.

Personal development- "The last lecture", Randy Pausch's accounts of his life dreams and what you ouught to set out and do with yours (he was dying of massive tumors)

I am taking part in ‘My Marvelous Year,’ an on-line comic book reading club that is taking us through the entire history of Marvel Comics...currently reading stories from 1982, loads of fun!

Lately I've been reading mostly fiction, stuff randomly assigned from a website that lists the "1001 books you should read before your die," in which you get assigned a book at random and post a short review or comment. I've been mostly assigned books I was glad to become acquainted with, though there have been a few duds. Right now I'm reading "Her Privates We," a WWI story that I guess was well-known when it came out in the late 1920's, but it was new to me. I'm about half way through, and find it not wonderful but interesting enough. Other recent reads (not assigned) were "Our Mutual Friend" and "Dombey and Son." I had read them years ago, but decided to re-read some Dickens after seeing a stage adaptation of "Great Expectations."

Has anyone done one of those speed-reading courses or something? My reading isn't terrible, but I'd like it to be a bit faster. I know there's different kinds of speed reading (skipping, skimming etc) but there must be some techniques to 'speed up' this brain of mine.
