I'm presuming quite a few of the residents were on housing benefit, so they got their rent paid for them. Regardless of that, it seems to me that they were victims of economic pressures placed on the shoulders of ordinary people doing the job they were paid for.

Mentality needs to change, we need to put people first and not economics. I voted to leave the EU because I don't want to be dictated to, not because I thought it would make our country richer...big difference between the two and I think many people lose sight of that over here.

I'd rather be poor and be free than be rich and be a slave. I know which one would give me peace of mind.
Sounds like the regulations were inadequate .
I believe London has similar cost pressure to Sydney but more public housing .
What is for instance the median price for a 3 bedroom stand alone house inside the city of Greater London?
If the scots think similarly they will leave the union; they stayed in on economic grounds not because they like the English . Likewise Nth Ireland might be tired of the English telling them what to do.

If they were adequate it would never have happened.

Can't be arsed to look up the precise figures at the moment, but it's very high, far beyond the reach of most young people nowadays unless they get help from the bank of mum and dad. Guessing I would say the average rent for a one bedroom apartment in outer London is around £700-1000 per month, inner London and God knows!

If the scots think similarly they will leave the union; they stayed in on economic grounds not because they like the English . Likewise Nth Ireland might be tired of the English telling them what to do.

I don't think many people down south are bothered whether the Scots stay or leave...their choice. I haven't heard one Scotch accent in London for years...heard a lot of Polish, Romanian and Ukrainian though.

The attitude the English have towards the other parts of the union is part of the problem.

The changes if they left would be far greater than leaving the euro zone.

This fire has many looking at the regs within aussie .

It went to tender they was given options and like any company would they went for the cheapest way of doing it, the safer option was 2 pounds a M2 more, but if all the edges had been sealed it should never had happened.

But I think there is a lot more to come from it yet, there is also the way the inside just went up, as seen from the vid that was on the BBC news pages the other day, the insides was just gutted, but then saying that, tall building are notorious for up drafts so that would have been a big factor.

4 More blocks of flats are being emptied at the moment in London all with the same type cladding as this is being written, they was told to move out last night, but and yes there is a but, only if the want to, it means finding rooms for 3000 people.

What is the population of Scotland , Nth Ireland and Wales combined ? How many English in those places and how many of them in England .
It stuns me that still after everything the English still have given little thought to the state of their union .
The fall out if it broke up would dwarf the eu thing . Not underestimating that by the way .
The English seem to continue to be arrogant which is well noted by other union members . They also claim that the English bossed them around in the way the English accuse the eu of bossing them but that they drained the money out of these regions (particularly Scotland (nth sea oil etc) to prop up England .
If I was English I would be paying more attention rather than the sort of brusk wave off I have seen .

As said 5 million are in the UK and if the European boss's had there way they would be dumping another 5 million on the UK and bat an eyelid doing so and still want even more money from the UK, the UK pays the most into Europe on weekly bases to the turn of 350 million pounds, not even Germany pays that.

By the way just incase your not up to speed, the 5 million have been told they can stay with benefit's if the expats like me can stay in Europe, the EU boss's are saying its not enough.

A figure for the UK to leave there talking 600 billion pounds as a parting and on top of that they want us who are leaving to kick up a very big pile of cash towards there new headquarters as the one the have now is falling down.

Now can you see why we voted out, its been take, take and take from the UK.

Pegman You say we don't do enough for Scotland? who was it who paid for there lovely new Scottish parliament building, the Scots? No it was England to the turn of 414 million pounds and we may even be paying for the maintenance of it, on top of that they get lots of hand outs, so if they leave the UK, just think how much they will lose and how much the UK will save.

Oh how much has north sea oil been worth these last decades and don't tell me it is English oil lying just off the coast of England as many english have .

Your lack of respect to your union members is well noted .

One thing you just need to be put straight on Pegman, the oil fields are UK oil fields and not Scottish, you seem to forget there are oil fields all a round the UK and not just Scotland.

So if Scotland leaves the UK then they will have to pay the rest of the UK for them, and it would not be cheap and not forgetting the cost all the decommissioning of them, as that would then fall on them.

I think the is a bill of around 46 billion pounds to decommissioning them now, if its left as it is now, so if Scotland wants to be cut free then it would then fall on them.

Oh how interesting a variant in which they are English oilfields till they cost money then they are scot.
I am still stunned by your capacity to disrespect those who have helped you.

Have you ever considered treating your partners in a considerate manner and giving credit where credit is due? Next you will be telling me the scots were of no military use.

Technically the fire was caused by a malfunctioning fridge and I happened to watch a recent program on channel 4 (I think?) where firefighters did a demonstration with plastic backed fridges to demonstrate how quickly they can go up. The fireman couldn't remain in the same room as it after five minutes.

Apparently the insulating material on the back of the fridges are great at insulation, but have poor flame retardant properties. There is a lot of talk about cladding, but little talk of the source of the fire, so it appears to me that the little guy is going to by hung out to dry on this one as "someone must be held accountable".

The building regulation was a major contributor to this in my opinion. The BBC said the cladding was compliant with building regulations up to the 10th floor but not above it and should have used the more expensive stuff from this point up. This is because of the fire brigade's ladders couldn't reach above the 10th floor.

Now if you look at the photo's of grenfell tower and count 10 floors up, cover the above floors with your hand and then look to see how much fire damage is done below the 10th, I don't think even asbestos cladding would have saved the lives of those people in the floors above with that much intense heat below them.

The only thing that might have saved their lives is fire suppression (ie sprinklers) in the halls and stairs of the building to allow them to escape. However this would create another problem of increased rent to cover the cost of installation, maintenance and health and safety checks, which people never like.

Building regulations are not perfect. The tests done on this cladding were likely done in a lab, at ground level, without any of the conditions present on the day of this fire like the very hot weather we have experienced this last week.

To do a proper test they would need to build a tower block and set it on fire and fill the block with things that tenants would likely have in their apartments that may catch fire, to replicate as close as possible such a building being occupied in day to day use. I'm guessing the costs of conducting such an accurate test would be huge.

Those who master others have force,
