  • Knives are too sharp and filing them down is solution to soaring violent crime, judge

A judge has proposed a nationwide programme to file down the points of kitchen knives as a solution to the country’s soaring knife crime epidemic.

Last week in his valedictory address, retiring Luton Crown Court Judge Nic Madge spoke of his concern that carrying a knife had become routine in some circles and called on the Government to ban the sale of large pointed kitchen knives.

Latest figures show stabbing deaths among teenagers and young adults have reached the highest level for eight years, and knife crime overall rose 22 per cent in 2017.

In the past two months, he said, there have been 77 knife-related incidents in Bedfordshire, including three killings.

Judge Madge told the assembled judges, barristers and court staff: “These offences often seem motiveless - one boy was stabbed because he had an argument a couple of years before at his junior school.”

He said laws designed to reduce the availability of weapons to young would-be offenders had had “almost no effect”, since the vast majority had merely taken knives from a cutlery drawer.

He said: “A few of the blades carried by youths are so called ‘Rambo knives’ or samurai swords. They though are a very small minority.

"The reason why these measures have little effect is that the vast majority of knives carried by youths are ordinary kitchen knives. Every kitchen contains lethal knives which are potential murder weapons.

"Accordingly, it is very easy for any youth who wants to obtain a knife to take it from the kitchen drawer in his home or in the home of one of his friends.”

As a result - said the judge - the most common knife a youth will take out is eight to ten inches, long and pointed, from his mother's cutlery tray.

He asked: “But why we do need eight-inch or ten-inch kitchen knives with points?

“Butchers and fishmongers do, but how often, if at all, does a domestic chef use the point of an eight-inch or ten-inch knife? Rarely, if at all."

"Acknowledging that any blade could cause injury, the judge pointed out “slash wounds are rarely fatal.”

So, he said: “I would urge all those with any role in relation to knives - manufacturers, shops, the police, local authorities, the government - to consider preventing the sale of long pointed knives, except in rare, defined, circumstances, and replacing such knives with rounded ends.

"It might even be that the police could organise a programme whereby the owners of kitchen knives, which have been properly and lawfully bought for culinary purposes, could be taken somewhere to be modified, with the points being ground down into rounded ends," he said.

Office for National statistics figures published in February revealed 215 fatal stabbings had been recorded by police in the 12 months to March 2017.

This was on par with the previous year’s 212 stabbing deaths but a marked increase on the 186 in the year to March 2015.

The latest figures show ten 16 or 17 year olds lost their lives in the year to March 2017, as well as 51 people aged between 18 and 24. The combined total is the highest since 2008/9.

In the first 100 days of 2018, 53 people were killed in the capital alone, many of them victims of knife crime.

New tougher sentencing guidelines for knife crime were introduced in March, with gang membership or carrying a concealed weapon both identified as aggravating factors which can increase a jail term handed down for a knife offence.

The Sentencing council said the reforms were intended to “reflect Parliament’s concern about the social problem of offenders carrying knives.”

Ban all knives...that will solve the problem. (tongue-in-cheek)

In the UK we need to go back to the bobby on the beat, but in twos the way it used to be then they can pat down any youngsters loitering around there beat, they wont like saying we are being picked on, but if they find knives on them, that lovely phrase comes out, your nicked sonny.

Last month, someone there was arrested over carrying a potato peeler. He was cited as being in possession of an "offensive weapon".

To be clear, the article I read didn't mention if he was brandishing it.

Child proof the world; that's why there are so many stupid people in it. It seems all the dumb folks that would have died doing something stupid now stay alive and habitate the planet because we child proofed it so they won't get hurt and die!

It's like the UK is running a social experiment just to see how much they can get away with (public surveillance, porn passes, dulling knives, silencing different opinions, not prosecuting Muslim who commit heinous crimes the same as other citizens.)

Meanwhile, us Americans are looking at the situation like a younger more successful brother watching his older sibling screw up by making the same mistakes we learned from. We don't ban knives or guns because of gang violence, we go after those gangs and put violent criminals in prison or death row, and allow our people to protect themselves with legal forearms (that are hard to get legally but less heavily regulated).

Like Trump did say, in just a very short times London topped New York in its monthly killing, but in 2016 there was 1604 knife killings in the USA with another 472 from blunt objects, UK there was just 186 knife killings quite a difference and blunt objects there seems to be no figures of them, and if you really look round the figures for NY were always quite high making London look like a real safe place to live which in fact it still is, that's if you want to live there, here where I am now its piece and quite, just the odd chain saw and strimmer's making any noise

And don't talk to me about chain saws have just clipped my right hand with mine, there was a very big ouch and a few F words.

Why do you have to bring Trump into everything? Just to be clear to everyone, this thread is not about Trump or politics. Let's not go down that road in this thread.

Sorry Cav was it not Mr Trump who brought it up first, perhaps he should have thought of that, when he was putting down old London town.

When are they going to learn that there are a lot of A holes out there, and no matter what they will kill and injure others always.. It really is a part of human nature, the violence.. As far as "dull" knives go, That is how a person gets cut in the first place!! I've always got cut with a "dull" one.. Haven't they ever heard of a screw driver shiv?? A screw driver kills just the same..

I wish this was a joke but here in Canada they banned the import of folding knives recently as they are now considered a concealed weapon!? Would a person have any idea how many there are here?? Going after Grandpa's "widdler".. Where is this gonna end?? That "reset button" needs to be hit soon, lol!!

Yup they are there.. That's where Canada's "leaders" got the bright idea from in the first place, it's hilarious.. I can walk around here in public, go into stores, etc. with a full length Kabar on my hip (yes, have 2)!? Yet can't have a Swiss Army knife in my pocket!! It's nuts, for those of u who don't know a Kabar is a fighting knife used in the US Military for the most part and close to 11" long including the handle.. I other words, it's a real killer in the right hands..
