Ok so I thought we could discuss ethics .

Just to get discussion going here is something off the web.

    Quote

    Ethics and ideology

Some philosophers teach that ethics is the codification of political ideology, and that the function of ethics is to state, enforce and preserve particular political beliefs.
They usually go on to say that ethics is used by the dominant political elite as a tool to control everyone else.
More cynical writers suggest that power elites enforce an ethical code on other people that helps them control those people, but do not apply this code to their own behaviour.

The above only involves how politics is affected by ethics. I believe ethics is a broader concept and involves both human morals and character and how people treat their fellow human beings and other creatures and how they want to be treated by others. Unfortunately, when politics get involved, we get the will of the majority trying to impose their concept of ethics on the minority.

The law is the codified moral and ethical will of the politicians who appear to represent the majority of the people.

For the Buddha ethics act as guidelines for attaining enlightenment. It is a generally accepted that certain behaviors bring enlightenment and reduce suffering while others impede enlightenment and cause suffering.

The Noble Eightfold path to enlightenment consists of cultivating eight factors that aim to promote and perfect the three essentials of Buddhism, namely mental discipline, wisdom, and of course, ethical conduct.

Ethical conduct is built on a broad concept of universal love and compassion for all living beings. Essentially, working/living for the good of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world.

Indeed, Confucius taught that the most important thing about behavior was what he called “harmony.” If what you do is in harmony with the rest of society, then they are ethical actions and you are a good person. Society, for Confucius, is like music. All the different parts should work together.

Socrates felt that humans only have one thing to consider in any action, whether it is acting right or wrongly. Are we acting in an acceptable or unacceptable manner? Ethics are the norms by which we measure acceptable and unacceptable behavior.

Ok a lot to unpack here , many people take there morality directly all packed up by a religon . Christians are a great example this is not ethics . Bhuddism may be a bit different in that it requires thought and to live an aware life though certainly the same trap is there .

Confucius is just telling people to toe the party line and not rock the boat .

So ethics deal with right and wrong how do you come to a decision about what is right and wrong what is acceptable or not . Does society in general impose this on your personal ethics?

You make the assumption that the majority of people and politicans are guided by ethics I would challange that.

                      Ethos and ethics.

An ethos is an idea built on repeated use that yields desiref results. Because it's repeatable and show the same results it continues to be used. I. E the ethos behind jelqing is that it pumps blood into the unit and stretches the Smooth muscle. This can produce penis growth.

The ethos is the the repeated use of an excercise method and what it does on a physiological level the result for a great percentage of repeated use in the population.

So an ethos is theory behind a proved method.

Ethics are actually based on political methods overall. Even the ancients used ethics through religion. Religion being a form of politics. The ethic is repeated throughout society and shows results in getting people to be more predictable and beneficial to their fellows.

Morals are more personal. So for example, you may think murder is wrong another may feel it's right under certain conditions.

I do not think that society specifically imposes ethics upon a person. Rather the ethics are imprinted or socialized through the lens of society.

I do not think the goal is to "toe the party line", but rather to find the best way to fit in without disrupting the world around you.
