Anyone good with computers?

I'm totally useless with computers, absolutely clueless. My desktop icons have all disappeared and i don't know how the hell to get them back. I access the net by doing ctrl-alt-del and go into New Task. Its a complete nightmare trying to operate it. Anyone know what might be up? Was having a few problems before, nothing major, just itunes disappeared and stuff. I bought a new AVG security thing but my laptop seemed quite unstable recently, and now this. Thanks very much for any help.

Eric can you use the start menu?

You can use that to open my computer/c/etc... and copy new shortcuts to your desktop. Anyhow all the programs should still work fine.

Cheers Zen, start menu no man, its gone. All i can use is task manager. Can use "browse" to get to desktops and stuff, but no idea how to get them back on my screen, its just my background, no icons.

Have you got a log btw Zen, i'll have a look. You got some great gains and i'd be interested to know how you went from girth 5.1 (where i'm at) to 5.5 (where i'm going). Cheers.

Don't usually recommend things, but I have so much luck with these people. It will be a one time fee, but they take over your computer, clean it all out and get it running like new.
I use them quite often, but I subscribe with a monthly fee. I have used their service 6 times in the last 2 months and they are really good. (jP

Cheers JP much appreciated. Had a quick look that looks great. I didn't even know they could fix things remotely over the web! I sent it in to a place before but it was pretty costly doing that. Not sure if that particular site does UK jobs, but at least i know sites like that are on the go, they're a good idea.

If you want the same type of thing that JP posted, and I have used quite frequently in the past, take a gander at Geeks to Go! – Tech experts answer your questions and head over to their forums. They offer free support and fixing.

To me it sounds like your explorer has crashed... Have you rebooted your computer since this problem occurred? Also from task manager (not sure what version of Windows you're running) but if you go to File>Start New Task (Run) and type in " explorer.exe " you might have some luck getting your desktop and task bar back.

Thanks a lot Millia, that looks a good site too, i'll definitely be keeping that one in mind. Yeah i always had firefox and explorer, but explorer has vanished into thin air. Tried finding it from 'new task', but it just says "application failed to initialize".

It sounds like some malware attacked your computer. Go to 'malwarebytes' website and download that application free, run it and it should fix that problem. I had one take over my computer and same thing, everything disappeared. hope that helps

Do what pe_ZEN has said and if that doesn't help your case out, I'd highly suggest going to post in the Malware Removal section of the Geeks To Go! Forums, they've helped me remove PLENTY of malware from my computer, friends computer, my computer again times two, and my girlfriends.

I prefer things simple, so try this. Right click on the lower taskbar and check show desktop. You can toggle them on and off. =]

You may also right click on your back ground - view - show desktop.

Could be malware, or could be you have just hidden them.

Try this:

1. Right click on your desktop
2. Choose "Properties"
3. Click on the "Desktop" tab at the top left side of the box
4. Select "Customize Desktop" in the lower right hand portion of the box
5. You will have 3 or 4 check boxes (My Documents, Internet Explorer, Recycle Bin, etc.
Make sure they are checked. If so, could be malware.
