Over and over again on threads I have read for years I have heard the word "depressed" or "depression" bantered about like some badge of honor or something. I bet 7 out of 10 people on this forum "suffer" from depression. Don't you like the way we word it; "he suffers from depression".Makes it sound even worse; my God the guy is suffering from depression. I don't know a lot about it but I do know something. Depression is an illness. Whether it is from a chemical imbalance or psycological issues it is an illness. An illness must be treated or it will get worse. Illness are treated by those guys called doctors, you know those guys we go to when we're not feeling well and all he gives us is a pill which is why we actually went to him in the first place. Funny we complain that all they do is give us a pill; I think they started giving out pills when people stop believing in faith healing!
Now what kind of doctor should diagnose and treat the illness of depression? Well your internist or primary care man may give it a shot and give you an rx for xanax or something but honestly he's not really qualified to do that. You need to go to a doctor that is trained to try and fix the mind. He's called a psychiatrist. If you feel that you are suffering from that mental illness that is called depression then you must seek out the guy that was trained in that field. I would respectfully tell my internist if he wanted to treat my depression that although he is qualified to treat many things I would prefer to go to the guy specially trained in this field so please refer me to one. That way I can get my illness cured by the best possible person because depression is hard to cure.
We also have that other type of depression; the self diagnosed depression. These are people that just don't want to do certain things and they use that word to get them out of doing what life call all of us to do.Maybe they are " depressed" and usually they are the first ones to say they are but yet they do nothing about it.Why don't they go to get getter? Do they enjoy being depressed? Maybe they're not depressed at all and just don't want to do things and don't want to be told there is nothing wrong with them. Very similar to the guys that have diagnosed their own ed when the doc tells thm there is nothing physically wrong with them. Yup the doc is wrong; I know I have it!
All I know is that it's a problem. If you feel you're depressed then get the help you need. If you say you're depressed and you don't want help then I have no sympathy for you.You are responsible for the quality of your own life; don't blame depression or anything or anybody else if you don't at least try to get help. What I do feel is very wrong is when people on here all well intentioned tell others that they must be suffering from depression. No they are not doctors, no special training, but they "know" about depression. They don't know the harm they cause others when they say that. Please be careful!
