Yes probably thousands we spell differently and for many things we have different names, for example:

sidewalk = pavement
airplane = aeroplane
pants = trousers
diaper = nappy
fall = autumn

The one that bugs me the most is using fall instead of autumn: autumn is much more beautiful than saying fall. Eminem saw the beauty in it when he used the word autumn in his song "stan". I assume the reason the usa call autumn "fall" is because when autumn comes leaves fall.
