Hi Barry, I want to second the motion, but add some cautions. I had been a runner for 32 years until my hip wore out (bone on bone).

Caution #1: joints wear out faster. Use glucosamine chondroitin supplements DAILY. I didn't do it and by the time I was 26 I tore knee cartilage. After the surgery, I ran in pain. I started taking supplements and after about 6 months I was running pain free again. Also if you don't have a runner's body (lean), that also is a contributing factor to joints being worn down faster. Extra body weight is tough on joints.

Caution #2: Don't run everyday and don't run too long (1 hour max). Intense exercise creates too many free radicals in the body, which has many negative physical effects. Have you seen marathon runners? They look older than their age, with saggy skin. Free radicals damages skin tone and firmness. They also raise chances of cancers developing. Take loads of anti-oxidants to help counteract.

Caution #3: Buy the best running shoes you can afford and don't buy any with air pockets in the soles. Your foot needs to conform to the surface you are running on. Elevated soles also promote pronation, which can end up giving you problems down the road, such as shin splints.

Caution #4: Do not run on hard surfaces if at all possible. I think running on streets eventually did my hip joint in. Asphalt has a little give. Treadmills are excellent as they have a lot of give. If you can run on a sandy beach, all the more better.

There was a time when I was running 4-5 times a week and was gaining weight. I was neglecting working out with weights. Running alone is not enough.

    My two cents.

I love running. It gives me this feeling of being powerful and free.
I read in a book that running has similar effects on the brain as cocaine. It releases a certain neurotransmitter that makes you feel awesome.

Exercise in general is my drug of choice. I used to be on the cross country team in College But, I came tenth last in the province. There are people out there who take running to a whole new level, and it showed when they finished 8k in less than 30 minutes. My best time for 8k was 36 or 37 minutes.

I never run for more than 45 minutes, and it's usually short and intense with lots of breaks. I like chasing down people riding on bikes on the bike path. I also like pretending I'm in a race with the person way ahead of me and I time myself to see how fast I can catch up to them.

Whenever I can, I also do sprints uphill. The intense burst of energy is great for fat burning.

I also skip rope and row.

Why not walk. You burn approx. the same number of calories. Remember work = force times distance. No wear and tear on hips and knees. You don't need expensive running shoes.

I agree with frb3, walking is great exercise and very easy on the joints. You just need to give it a little more time than running/jogging and can/should be done daily.

The best activity for joints is swimming. It's low impact, and is often used by athletes in recovery stages.
It's great for pregnant women, old people, children...

Plus you burn more and you tone your whole body. It's good for the skin. (bad on the hair, though; wear a cap)

Ive actually read that walking is better for burning fat off rather than running. I like to walk when there are inclines.

Theres actually a city in Italy (i forgot its name) that has the highest average of long living people in it. The thing about this city is that no cars are allowed in it, so everyone walks whenever they need to get somewhere.
