  • Best way to take maca root

    Hi,

    I have been taking powdered maca root for the last few weeks and I have had difficulty in finding the best way to take it, mainly because it is fucking disgusting!

    The container says to take 1-2 spoons of maca root powder mixed in a glass of water, I tried this and could barely keep it down, it is truly one the most disgusting things that I have ever had.

    Then I added it into Kingpole's erection tea thinking that the other flavours would mask the taste, however it doesn't seem to dissolve well and there will invariably be large clumps of maca powder, which is also disgusting when swallowed

    I then tried to add it to my protein shakes but it doesn't dissolve and I just end up swallowing lumps of maca powder

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Next time I think that I will just buy maca capsules instead of powder but I still have 75g left and would like to find a way to use it

    Fruit juices are usually the best way to take supplement powders that aren't too decent tasting. I prefer grapefruit juice, as it's acidic enough in flavor to over power most nasty tasting things. I actually just chugged down a nasty mix of protein powder in Gatorade Prime followed by a sip of grapefruit juice, and all I taste is the lovely grapefruit juice now.

      Ok, grapefruit juice, i'll try that, thanks!

      Do you think I should dilute it a lot, with 2 spoons of maca in a full glass of juice or should I dilute it a little by treating it like shot and then refiling the glass to get the remaining powder?

            picked up some grapefruit juice after the gym this morning and just used it for the maca and it worked great, couldn't taste the maca at all repped!

            However, since grapefruit has undesirable interactions with medication does drinking it negate or reduce the effects of maca?

            Here is a link but since I don't know what the active chemicals in maca are I couldn't verify using the list

            Also, off-topic, The list says that grapefruit has a negative effect on viagra, cialis and levitra, and since the active component of these drugs is nitric oxide does that mean that grapefruit juice inhibits/suppresses nitric oxide?

              Some quick research shows that some of the enzymes in grapefruits and some similar acidic fruits reduces the absorption of the listed medications there, which then makes it easier for the medications to pass directly into the blood stream at a much faster and higher rate than they're designed for. Grapefruit juice actually makes the medications more powerful. Supplements should be no issue, since we want that stuff mostly absorbed.

              Thanks for bringing that up though. Now I know why it's been better to take grapefruit juice with Creatine. Always thought it was the sugars and carbs that made it absorbed easier and better.

                I don't have any creatine at the moment but I do have whey protein, would grapefruit juice accelerate absorption of protein as well? similar to creatine

                      How do you know it helps absorb more creatine? I've read before that it does but not on a reliable site. I've also read that grapefruit juice stops absorption of some things and that it lowers testosterone, is there any truth in this?

                        I have never heard anything about grapefruit lowering testosterone. But it definitely screws with absorption of a lot medications. Like DemOne said: it does increase bioavailabilty of certain drugs by blocking the metabolism of the drug, but that means it increases the amount of time it stays in your system and create a toxic effect. That's why its contraindicated with most drugs.

                          Grapefruits make it harder for the liver to break down Estrogen, but one glass of grapefruit juice or one grapefruit a day isn't going to harm you by lowering test levels.
                          Grapefruit juice intake does not enhance but rather protects against aflatoxin B1-induced liver DNA damage through a reduction in hepatic CYP3A activity

                            So if I drink one glass of grapefruit juice mixed with creatine and protein per day it will help absorb the creatine but will not lower testosterone or raise estrogen levels? Sounds good
