  • Dance Exchange

Just this past weekend, there was a dance exchange here in my area. A dance exchange is where dancers from all over the world come together and, well, dance. This was a blues-fusion dance exchange, and there were classes in tango, jook joint blues, modern dance, hip-hop, ballroom, acrobatics, and more! It was pretty epic, and it really helped me to decide what 2012 has in store for me. I'll first tell about the amazing experiences, then relate what I think this means for the next year for me.

    -----------------------------

The dance exchange was held over 3 days (Fri, Sat, Sun), with classes starting in the morning, going until evening, then a 3-hour break for dinner, and starting the dance from 9pm-5am.

Day 1 (Friday) wasn't anything spectacular. I was suprised to see a lot of people I knew from before, either from here in my area, or that I met in Portland in July. There was even someone standing at the front door whose job it was to give hugs to people as a way of welcoming them to the exchange. What a great way to set the mood! There was a 30-minute break in between classes where people could rest up, eat a snack, socialize, and even dance a bit before the next classes started. I'd decided not to dance during the breaks so I could save my energy for the dance in the evening. I went to the classes, then took a break for dinner, and then only stayed at the dance until 1am, which is considered leaving early. I was tired and couldn't really find my "groove," so my friend advised that I just go home and get some rest so I can dance better the next day. Boy, was she right!

Day 2 (Saturday) started out really well. I'd decided to dance during the breaks in classes. Instead of making me tired, it actually helped keep my energy level up! I'd really started to hit a groove around 3-4pm. Also, since there were relatively few people dancing during the breaks, it meant everyone else who was resting on the sidelines was watching. I must've been dancing really well, because after that I was constantly being asked to dance, even far into the evening!

    Highlights of day 2:

    - I danced with Heidi, my very first blues dancing instructor. After the dance, she said that it was "awesome." Then some of my friends told me that, as they were watching us dance, she looked like she was really having fun.

    - I danced with Ruth, my more recent blues instructor, even though she didn't say anything afterwards, I knew she really liked it. I could tell my dancing was turning heads.

    - I danced with a woman from Vancouver. She was gorgeous, wore a nice red dress. I said something a little flirty: "Are you from LA?" "No, I'm from BC. Why?" "It's because women from LA really know how to dress. That dress looks really good on you." After the dance, my friends were asking me who she was, because she was smiling like nothing else; they thought she was really into me. I was just glad I could make her smile.

    - I danced with that hot 19-y/o dancer girl, who I previously thought was a b*tch. My perspective on her has changed, as she's made more of an effort to get to know me; she's just extremely intelligent and confident, which comes off as bitchy if you don't know how she works. Otherwise, she's open and affectionate. Anyways, I danced with her, and there was a huge smile on her face since the beginning. I think my dancing is getting really good.

Day 3 was more of the same as Day 2: dancing during the breaks, awesome dances in the evening. Highlights of day 3:

    - I danced with Xena. She whispered, as we started to dance, and as if she were talking to herself, "I'm falling." (I assume this was a truncated form of "I'm falling in love") Then as we did a certain scoot move, she let out a few barely audible orgasmic exhalations, "haah, haah, haah..." It was a huge turn-on.

    - I danced with someone else whose name I forgot. She also whispered to herself, as we started to dance, "So good."

    - At the end of the night, I approached a woman, we started dancing from afar. Then I noticed her gaze to the side. Another man was approaching as well. We started a "steal" dance, where I danced with her, and he looked for an opportunity to steal; then he danced and I looked for an opportunity to steal. It was epic.

    - For the last song, there was a tall, slender, gorgeous woman wearing a delicate lace top. She entered the room, there was hardly anyone else on the dance floor. I led her into a turn, and noticed that it was very controlled and upright. My suspicions were correct: she was a ballerina. Then I asked myself, "Why did I not meet her until the very end?" Ends up she lives about 3 hours away. I may have to go visit her blues scene just to dance with her again.

Monday (technically day 4), went to the regular Monday blues venue. Many of the stragglers that hadn't gone home from the exchange were there; there was a disproportionate number of incredible out-of-town dancers there. Highlights:

    - Danced with Ruth again, afterwards she described it as "gorgeous."

    - Danced with Lessa, an instructor from Seattle, and easily considered one of the very best blues dancers in the world. After the dance, she described it as "beautiful" and went on to ask every follow in the immediate vicinity if they'd danced with me, and if they hadn't, that they should.

I will continue with a second post about what I think the next year holds for me. For now, I have to go get some dinner and go watch a movie with my friend. It's that 18-y/o girl I asked out on a date over facebook; we've been hanging out a lot over Winter break. It's been really nice.

That sounds killer man! It must have felt great to dance, and dance well, with all those beautiful ladies. Sounds like 2012 is off to a heck of a start.

        Indeed it is, my friend.

So, last year I think was more about analyzing myself and changing myself into the person I want to be. This year I think will focus more on connecting to other people. It will start small, as I will first need to be open-hearted enough to make connections for simple friendships. I think I need to learn how to make close friends before I am ready to start a relationship. Plus, I think if I just work on being open, a relationship will just naturally happen. In other words, it's not something I need to directly pursue.

2012 is going to bring about a lot of new interactions with new people. But I still need to monitor myself, and I can't just stop analyzing and changing myself, thinking that I'm already done with that part. It's a continuous process.
