Editing a picture

Does anyone know a good, easy-to-use program that I can download to change the background color of my avatar? I'd like it blue or purple

Note: I don't have money for photoshop nor do I want to buy it for editing a small 100x100 avatar.

I have practiced with that type of stuff for a while, but you would probably need the original image and it will need to be larger so it doesn't look weird. You can use Paint.net or GIMP to get what you are looking for and they are free.

GIMP is probably the best free program, but I agree, it's difficult to use and it sucks.

I would vote for GIMP as well as being the best free Image Manipulation Software. I use it and Photoshop CS 5 (which damn right cost too much but it kind of worth it). Most things you can do in PS you can also do in GIMP by learning the API (but you can also include python scripts now in GIMP as well (so there a plus)).

I had CS2 that someone gave me for free. And CS3 through my school.
