Ideas on the testosterone: Your levels decrease with age as you know. If you gain weight and you are big around the waist you will produce less testosterone and more estrogen. Thus you get man tits. I rotate shifts and accredited most of how I felt due to that. As with my general practioner he kept saying all of my thyroid and testosterone levels were normal. This went on for years. So one day my wife had her hormonal doctor appointment and I just went with her because I was off that day. While at her doctors office she mentioned my isssues and the doctor told me she would check my levels. She told me the doctors need to perform all of the blood panels testing. My testosterone level came back as 146. I was told the normal level is between 400 to 800. Also found out my thyroid level was low too. So my journed began with testosterone replacement therapy. You need to fiind a good book to read about this. There are many misconceptions about this therapy. I first tried Androgel rub on, then oral, then implants, and finally to date I am doing injections because it works best for me. The beads implants tritrate over a 4 month period. Some prefer that but I did not like it for 2 reasons. First it is uncomfortable when the procedure is done and it raised my PSA to a level of 7. I was told if there is anything suspicous with your prostate it will show. But when I decided to go with injections my PSA level returned to normal. During the time wihen my testosterone was at 146 I had ED issues and it was making me depressed. Now I fell great with no ED issues. It will take some time to get to normal. They are wanting me to stay around 600 on my testosterone level. You have your levels checked every 3 months until they are confident you at where you should be then you go every 6 months. I give myself 1.5 cc injections every 2 weeks. Also I give myself vit. B injections every 3 weeks. I have no problem giving myself the injections. I use a 22 gauge 1.5 inch. You will see a big change in how you feel emotionally and physically. I recommend all men starting at the age of 35 check their levels and have the doctor perform all of the panel testing. Exercise especially weight lifting and your diet will help. Got to keep the belly fat down. Good luck!

What glam said. Never jack off within three days of make tests. Especially prostate blood work. Couldn't read the thread. Hope it worked out back to normal.

600 is roughly average for a man of 40, but the standard deviation is roughly 200.

Resistance training, proper sleep cycles, healthy fats + cholesterol etc. will all help increase testosterone.

A bit of exercise, a slight change in diet, and better sleep would help you get it up to normal
            Interesting.

I am 52, almost 53, and I was feeling lack of energy the last few years, and would wake up in the morning feeling foggy minded and grumpy. I could not afford to be tested for low T with my limited income. I thought I'd try a booster supplement to increase free testosterone, and WOW!
I have taken a lot of different supplements and have NEVER had one that made me feel noticeably better, let alone in under one week, until I found TEST X180 ! I wake up feeling sharp and clear minded, my mood is a LOT better (I used to have Seasonal Affective Daylight Disorder), and just yesterday I had the CRAVING to do chinups! I have no chin up bar at my apt.
My erections have been good before and since, with no discernable change in them, but I FEEL TEN YEARS YOUNGER!

Also, thanks Padawan for sharing those links. I saw them when they were added to Art of Manliness, a great resource for all things manly.

If you're really serious about this and want to improve your test levels, I suggest the following. Start exercising regularly, gradually introduce weight lifting, get rid of extra fat and try to build muscle. And I mean really serious weight lifting, nutrition etc. After 6 months or so, go take another test and see what the levels are then. I'm not an expert on this, but I think weight lifting and nutrition play a big part.

islander_a, thanks for the suggestion, and sorry for the delayed response. No I am not in very good shape at the moment. I'm only about 10 - 15 pounds over my ideal weight, but I have not been on an exercise program in over a year and a half. It's something I definitely want to get back to before doing another test. I have improved my diet recently, so hopefully that will help too. Thanks.

Thanks, Pegasus. I'm not as worried about this as I was, but I am going to try to exercise, eat right, and refrain from alcohol for a while, and then do one more test, to see if it comes out any differently. Thanks for the reassurance.

This is why the normal range is so big, get a useful test done next time if you actually want to know how "manly" you are, rather then wheter you are healthy. The testosterone test was useless, because it is designed to see if you are healthy. Without any signs that your testosterone is low, this is a useless test to take. I hope your doctor told you so before taking your money.
CompensatingForMuscleMass, I received a detailed report on the test after making my original post, and it did list free testosterone as well as total testosterone. That paper has since disappeared, and I don't remember what the value was. I'm going to try to find it, and post again. Thanks.

Padawan, great links. Thanks very much. Wow - Testosterone week. It's funny. I'm seeing it everywhere now. I saw a commercial on TV the other day about it. Sleep could be a factor for me. I almost never get enough of it. My diet has always been better than most people, but that's not saying much. I'm working on the diet already. Exercise is next. Thanks again for the great links.

I wouldn't worry too much about your T level. 392 sounds perfectly fine. True, the test can be different depending on when you had it done. It will always be higher first thing in the morning. To answer the questions you originally posted:
                            1. I have never gotten a low reading then later got a high one. I have gotten consistent low readings, the lowest being about 140. That's a problem!
                            2. I am not aware of any tests that you can do yourself at home.
                            3. I am also not familiar to how alcohol affects T levels. I do not drink so I have no first hand knowledge of it. I have read that excess sugar and other things can affect your T levels. If you are concerned then it's a good idea to lay off the alcohol and retest.
There are numerous things you can take to naturally boost T levels. Exercise was mentioned but it works better if it is heavy lifting with large muscle groups such as doing squats. The production of T requires cholesterol so I was taking fermented cod liver oil mixed with butter oil to help mine since my cholesterol is always very low. Almonds and Brazil nuts also seem to help. Maca root also combined with Horny Goat Weed is a good supplement to take as well but if I remember right, you can only take it for a limited time then take a break before taking more. I used to take it before I knew I had low T. If you don't have many of these symptoms, then I wouldn't worry about it. I had all of these: lack of energy, feelings similar to depression, loss of muscle mass, weight gain specifically around mid-section, loss of libido, and in very low cases like mine, back spasms and ED problems. Hope this helps.
Thanks Looking4More. I don't think I have any of those symptoms. I do have low muscle mass, but that's probably because I'm not exercising at all. If I get enough sleep, I have tons of energy, and I feel great, so maybe it was just an off number, or my normal level is on the low side. I've been busy, and bad about responding to everyone, but I did read your response a few weeks ago, and I picked up both Almonds and Brazil nuts last time I was in the store.

Hopefully this is a false alarm, but I'm going to do some of the natural things and see if my level comes out any differently.

Were you able to get your level up with the natural supplements?

                            Thanks again for the response.

Thanks for the response, shanghai1334. Wow, that's scary that your GP didn't detect your low level. Did he do the test and it came back in range, or did he just not check it? That's quite an ordeal you've gone through. That PSA link is scary.

I'm thinking I'm OK, because I don't seem to have any of the symptoms, but I'm going to get tested again, and keep an eye on it. Thanks again for the response and good luck to you.

littlebigman, thanks for the response. That's pretty wild that you've seen such a drastic improvement from a supplement. So that's something you buy over the counter? Do you have any good links on that? I'm curious about what's in there.

I can get depressed in the winter, too, but if I get enough sleep, I'm usually OK.
