My in laws have that opinion too. But not when it comes to me or my kids. Guess I'm the right kind of brown person.

I just realized how that may come across. I wasn't intending to be calling out anyone (my in-laws - yes). It is just that I have encountered quite a bit of prejudice in my time, which seemed to diminish when people found out that I was born in Canada, and don't have an accent from 'one of those places'.

Disappointing in these days and times - more so since I've become a father. I was hopeful that my kids wouldn't have to go through what I've gone through in my lifetime.

Sentiments on immigration and refugees are complicated at the best of times, but the sentiments of those like my in-laws who accept one immigrant over another 'type' of immigrant is just plain wrong IMHO. The rationale just doesn't hold water.

The rationale on this thread is don't pay people smugglers to get you in illegally .

If you enter aussie in a legal manner then I don't care where you came from .While every country has people within it who are bigoted aussie didn't have a particular problem in the past . In recent times there is rising anti muslim sentiment and the rise of right wing populists like Pauline Hanson does not help either . The refugee groups have not been helped by high rates of crime amongst some groups.

All countries have debate about what level of intake both refugee and immigrant is in the national interest . Australias intake of both is high by international standards.
Tom your suggestion is that at least some of the debate is based on the wrong premise ?

After several years of no activity a boat with suspted illegals arrived in north queensland recently . Only 15 people on board when they arrived in the Daintree .
Surprisingly none were eaten by crocs .

The countries that took in refugees should have only taken in the ones from Syria with the intention of giving them temporary refuge and sending them back eventually once the turmoil and fighting had stopped. Only the ones that integrated, found jobs and learned the language should be given leniency to stay as permanent residents/eventual-citizens. It was via the war in Syria did refugees from Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and etc. come in crushing waves.

The United States and Europe should have put pressure and sanctioned those rich spoiled brats that make up the GCC (Kuwait, Saudi, Qatar and etc.) to do their part and help temporarily house the Syrian refugees until it was safe for them to go home.

Ongoing effort being given on how to get immigrants and refugees to settle outside the major metro areas .
The immigration debate is being driven by overcrowding in major metro areas.

On the other hand a lot of local support for a Tamil couple who are to be deported as non refugees . The people of Biloela where they lived support their claim to refugee status and to them remaining in aussie. The difference ? Biloela has no crime gangs made of ex refugees ,this small town is not overcrowded it;s infrastructure not overloaded . By all accounts a lovely young couple with 2 young kids helps too.

Pegman Did you see how the UK is now getting boatpeople it was across to kent now there moving up to Linconshire, now that's a hard crossing, perhaps we should send them up to the Outer Hebrides, I think they would just want to go home, get pretty windswept up there, you have to keep young children on pieces of rope or they get blown away.

You have to arrange your own .

My suggestion would be to arrange good jobs as well as a country of residence .

I hear the Ukraine army is recruiting .
