  • Does Rep Matter?

Seeing one of the Admin rep one of the mods, I would like to know if Mods and Admin actually care about receiving rep from us mere mortals? Do you feel you no longer need it? Is it more valuable when received from a more senior member?

I think it's nice to know that people appreciate your thoughts and that your trying to help, but how important is rep to the average gym goer?

Is the reputation beyond repute the highest rep gets?

Also seeing a guy with a different routine get negatively repped, how would you feel if someone negatively repped you? Would you care?

They are usually given for very helpful, knowledgeable, or enjoyable posts. Sometimes, they are even given for encouragement.

When you receive a rep, your rep points go up, and your rep bar turns green and starts to grow. Even when your rep bar is full, the points continue to add up with each positive rep received.

Anyone can give reps by clicking on the star at the bottom left of every post. Giving reps does not affect your reps or take from your points. You can look at your reps received and given by looking in "My Account."

Hope that clears it up a little.

It should be noted that there are also "negative" rep points, which can be given for offensive actions.

Simply an acknowledgement given to / received from another member, is how I look at them.

Why so bothered about reps? They are just virtual " Well done's ".

Seems the "like" feature has replaced the "rep" feature, not that I'm complaining.

I find it a nice compliment, regardless of who or where they come from. It's a nice pat on the back, so to speak.

I have been repped by new members, who carry no points at all, and I still find it nice. So, for me, it's not about the points.

Just a nice way to interact with other members virtually, aside from regular communication.

Reps don't matter really. It is just a way of saying, "hey, nice work, I like your post here, great advice, etc".

They really don't measure up to the standards of a member though, although often they do. For example, I remember a douche who used to post on here a while back and he had a reputation beyond repute when often he would just belittle, insult, and disrespect other members. Not very accurate "rep"resentation of his rep points.

Whereas you might have an admin who has far lower rep points than someone like him, but who is stellar, informative, thoughtful and constantly doing work behind the scenes, has an obscenely more knowledge, experience and wisdom than that individual.

I appreciate reps from anybody, but I appreciate them far more for threads or posts I have worked hard on rather than reps for funny jokes or quips I made, if that makes sense? Yeh, the rep beyond repute is the highest.

It depends on what I was negatively repped on and by whom. It would matter, I would re-consider what I said and why it offended someone that much. I have only given 2 neg reps in my time here and they were very well-deserved.

So do you care if someone gave you negative rep? Are you only interested if it comes from above? or do you still like it when it comes from junior members?

Thanks for the links they are a good read, I was after comments though

LOL! Didn't want to reply before my second or third cup of tea, thought some links would do, meanwhile!

A rep is a rep, its not about the points, I agree with what workin_4_it said in post number 6.

How would you feel if someone hands you a flower/candy/something nice, or a smile, good, right?

                      Thanks everyone

I think it's nice to receive it from anyone too W4I!

thanks mebs that was a bit more like what I was after, I'm with you on the reps for putting work into posts with thought and feeling, I too prefer rep for this rather than joking (which I do a fair bit).

I hear you also on the douches who belittle members because they have title/respect/rep, I have come across one or two, but I haven't negatively repped anyone. Yet, "Wu hu ha ha" - Evil laugh

                        Good Morning Candyman,

Although the degree of importance members - admins and mods included - place on receiving a "greenie" or rep point may vary from individual to individual, I would think that anyone would appreciate them regardless of who they are or who they are received from. I know I certainly do.

Do we actually "need" them? Well, no...but they sure are nice when they are received for a particularly informative, helpful or well-thought out response or post. It lets that individual know that their words/thoughts have made a positive impact on someone else and that is a pretty great feeling in my books.

There is an additional "feel good" benefit from receiving rep points/increasing rep power; you then have the opportunity and pleasure of paying it forward to other members by "repping" them for their helpful, informative and quality posts, in turn, increasing their "rep power" as well. Everyone wins and we get a better forum as a result.

Yes a "reputation beyond repute" is the highest level but your "rep points/power" continue to accumulate after that level is reached.

                            Morning TPW (well afternoon here),

Thanks for the in depth post, I agree completely, I must admit when first receiving them it did feel a little like - hey these people like me (well most anyway), positive karma if it brightens someone's day that little bit.

Since I have probably received more rep from you than anyone, allow me to return the favour, thanks for answering my question in such detail.

Before the likes systems we had reps. It was a way of showing that your post has had a positive impact on the user or forum. You were rewarded by increase your points. It potentially could of showed value of the poster, except people would rep just because they saw a picture the poster posted and would like it. You could negative rep people if you disagreed with their impact on the topic or forum. If the post was negative or demeaning toward other members. It didn't happen often but it did.

Then came along the likes system. I don't think it was intended to replace the rep system but pretty much has. It is easier to hit the like button then rep someone and give an explanation. Apparently, we were modeling the facebook way of likes. I would like to see a dislike button if we have a life button. There are so many times I disagree with a post but I wont neg rep someone unless it is extremely bad.

So no I use the like system if I agree with the posts and believe they are of value. I rep when I find the poster has went above and beyond. The posters has added tremendous value with his/her post.
