I just wanted to share my experience with diet and nutrition and my new guidelines. I recently cut out most carbs. It's a fact that our bodies do not actually need carbs to survive. After experimenting for six weeks I truly believe that it would be difficult to be overweight without the consumption of sugars, carbohydrates and grains etc..
I have always experimented with diet and nutrition. I have tried high protein and the other extreme of a vegan diet and also some prefab diet plans where you buy the food. I 've had success with all of these nutrition protocols, but sticking with them for the long term was always rough for various reasons.
I'm middle age. Each year I get a little heavier. I'm muscular, but also heavier than I want to be. Ten weeks ago I was 220. Recently I started reading about KETO diets and ketogenesis. I tried this for a while, but didn't fell very well. Now I am just restricting carbs and I would describe my diet as mostly Paleo. I eat no bread, rice, oats, grains of any kind. No potatoes, no yams, no sugar and no beer. (I drink a little wine and sometimes a vodka and soda.)
Since starting this I have slowly lost 8 pounds in six weeks. My belly is no longer swollen, My sleep is awesome and my mood and energy levels are way more stable. The diet is easy to follow because it's all satisfying foods and I don't have to restrict calories. Just the sleep and mood factors are enough to make me stay with this way of eating.
My father and three friends jumped on board with me. My Dad is down 12 pounds in one month. My buddies have all lost 10-20 pounds. Before this diet my dad was chronically depressed, fat, inflamed and had fluid buildup in his legs. Now he calls me and he is FULL of energy, his sleep is great and he doesn't need his compression socks. All from eating, protein, fats and greens.
People say "aren't low carb diets unhealthy?" I say isn't 400 grams of sugar a day, 20 pounds of belly fat and diabetes unhealthy? I go out now and look around restaurants. The people all look absurdly bloated and stuffed to me. I watch them chomp down 100 grams of sugar just with breakfast. This messes with insulin and locks in fat. The truth is that I feel way better in every way and I'm actually eating more vegetables than ever so how can that be bad? I got blood work at the beginning of this so in six months I'll get it again to verify that the changes are making me healthier.
My advice to anyone that wants to feel better, healthier, lighter and happier is to cut out all sugar, grains, potatoes and most fruits. Eat as much fats, (Yes, I said eat as much fat such as coconut butter and avacados) proteins and vegetables as you want.
I do get some carbs from a shake I drink every day, from veggies, the occasional apple, some beans and hidden carbs in foods such as dressings. Even on 50 grams of carbs a day I am performing better than ever at the gym.
Another benefit of low carb is that I'm never starving. When your blood sugar levels are consistent you don't get wild cravings or extreme hunger. You just sort of feel like "Yea, I should probably eat something soon".
Do I feel deprived? Only a little. I'll occasionally have 1 hersheys minature and this is enough to kill any cravings.
Sample Low carb diet.
Morning:
Coffee with whole cream or sugar free creamer. I add a tbs of organic coconut oil sometimes and always add cinnamon because it stabilizes blood sugar.
Shakeology shake made with almond milk and two tbs of nut butter or coconut butter.
(Some days I have 3 eggs cooked in grass fed butter or olive oil with a side of sauteed spinach and feta cheese.)
Lunch: Some sort of salad with tons of greens and protein. Full fat dressing is fine and even recommended. Today i had a poke bowl which is like sushi over greens and it's fantastic.
Snack: apple with nut butter or turkey cheese rollups with some avacado
Dinner: Ground turkey tacos without the tortillas. Ground turkey, Black bean frijoles, onions, a little corn, hot sauce and cheddar cheese.
Big plate of spinach sauteed in olive oil or green salad or blanched broccoli.
This is all guy food and it's very satisfying. It flies in the face of all the nutrition bs we hear every day. The low fat high carb diet fed to us by the main stream has left Americans fatter and sicker than ever. With low carb you will lose weight and also maintain muscle. Look up what most bodybuilders and even some long distance athletes are doing to prepare for competitions
Hoping this might help men that have struggled with their weight and health. Keep your carbs under 50-100 grams a day. You choose, Paleo, Atkins or Keto. Any one protocol will work and you'll feel like a million bucks. A great book is Keto Clarity. It explains everything. I might be in ketosis, but I'm not sure. It doesn't really matter to me at this point. I'm hooked on controlling carb intake.
Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask. I'm happy to point you in the right direction.
