    Ok here we go...

Some put forward this idea in a thread not so long ago regarding alcohol. We have other programs here for porn and PE but as this is not strictly PE related I thought that I would post it here.

I like a drink. I like to have several drinks. Whisky is my thing. Now, as a challenge to myself, I am going to embark on a 90 cessation of alcohol. I'm not really a 'demon drink' kind of guy and am not going to write a big rant on the evils of alcohol. I've seen a lot of harm to society from alcohol from the kind of work that I used to do but I would still go home and have a drink.

I've had my periods of drinking moderately and of drinking heavily. I know about the health impact of booze but that has never really deterred me from drinking; I've always gone for quality of life (skewed toward having a good time) even if it involves some cost.

I want to engage in this program for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I will certainly have more money in my pocket which would be great. Secondly, I make poor decisions if I have drunk too much and I don't like it. Lastly, I want to demonstrate to myself that I have the willpower and dedication to challenge myself and succeed.

The positive health benefits will no doubt be a great reminder to me as I undertake this. I engage in physical training, though not at a high level anymore, and the reduced calories, clear head and better sleep will be great for this. I also believe that it will help with my PE training and life in general.

I'm not saying that I won't ever have a drink again. I just want to stop for a while and enjoy the benefits.

I would encourage anyone else who has some thoughts on quitting for a while to get onboard and we can support each other to success. I will post in this thread each day that I don't drink and invite anyone else that wants to give this a shot to do the same. I am starting at 0600 tomorrow (easing in gently...I don't even drink during the day anyway). I've quit before for 9 months due to training and work commitments and didn't really experience any withdrawals so hopefully my body is just rigged that way.

I do have my annual holidays coming up but I am determined to find ways of still socialising and enjoying them without alcohol. So, here I go. If I can put the same effort into this that I do for PE, I am set up for a win!

Join me if you have been thinking recently about taking a break from booze. Always good to have company

I stoped drinking for 3 months thinking it would be good for my health . I did lose a couple of kg but other than that no measurable positive . Actually felt worse, had constipation a lot .
I thought it might lower my bloodfats , improve my test level or some such but nope .

Sorry to hear that it made you feel worse; did it have any impact on your PE routine, EQ or associated things?

Alcohol does indeed cause oxidative damage at a cellular level. That means, even if you do not notice any sign or symptom throughout your life, it will reduce your lifespan if consumed in a constant basis.

I do drink once in a while with friends, but always aware in the back of my mind that is harmful. I pretend to live as long as possible.

Indeed Jackxxx. I studied the effects of alcohol on the human body many years ago and University and it is quite amazing that we use what is essentially a poison or toxic substance on ourselves for entertainment. Then again, not much about human behaviour surprises me anymore. I attended an autopsy also back in '98 on a mid-40s male who had died from long term alcohol misuse. It wasn't pretty but no autopsy is.

Forgot to mention though I did in my first post; I think that it is the poor choices that I make when I'm intoxicated that gets to me more than anything. I don't get into fights or anything like that but it does make me more prone to the wiles of women. I am not blaming the women; it is just that in the country that I live in I seem to be a bit of a catch. Alcohol weakens my resolve and although there have been no sexual encounters in recent times, it takes me dangerously close.

I'm trying to give my relationship a serious shot and it needs some work from both sides to improve. For my part, I think that laying off the booze is going to help on that front. If I don't start drinking at home, I don't go out and get myself into situations. I have many, many books here also that I want to enjoy and get through so I want to turn Saturday nights into some really great personal time at home. I don't need a drink to get work out of my system. I just need to have quality downtime engaged in meaningful activities, get restful sleep and fight stress levels from work and life in general by sticking to my physical training.

A break from the booze will have these benefits and more just in my particular case.

You're exactly in the right path. Thats what I was talking about in my thread about addictions. It seems the lifestyle we have today is so full of stress and unpleasant activities that people use unnecessary/wrong resources to keep up with that life. But that is not the solution. The solution is to confront the root of the problem and resolve the problem.

Already over 2 months in on mine. I have no intention on drinking again though, drink has caused such problems in my life it isn't worth it at all. Feel a lot better mentally and physically without it.

                  Good luck Praetorian

Cheers kickinthemebs...or rather...thanks hehe. Great to hear of your progress and very happy that you are feeling so good. Keep it up! I hope to do as well as you have. It is hard for me to tell at this stage but if I hit 3 months and see no good reason to have a drink, I won't. I would like it to just be for special occasions or moderate social stuff. Anyway, first day at it tomorrow and am stocked up on Green Tea which has served me well in the past. No cheating with a binge tonight either :P

                      That sounds familiar

I asked for it, and I am ready to participate.
I still have a substantial amount of drink in the house that is going to cause problems, because if it is here, I will drink it.
Just will take me a mini-minute to be ready to officially "start" on this ETOH detox deal !

Thanks for starting the thread, Praetorian !
This will go hand-in-hand with my restarting my aerobic and anaerobic training!

That's awesome FossilHead and a big thanks to you for helping to get this rolling in the first place. The thread will be here so just jump onboard when you are ready. Great to hear that you are getting back into training. Being off the booze helps so much with physical training; good restful sleep and the reduction in calories will be bonuses.

                        Cya in the threads.

Throw down that mutha'fookin gauntlet On the detox buzz! Yeh, I have went 1-3 months without drink a good few times before but always mistakenly viewed drinking with fond and nostalgic glasses, much to my error. The good of not drinking far outweighs the good of drinking for me... but its oh so easy and tasty to drink.

I've thought about this. I just like drinking. I usually have only one beer before bed. I'll have to think about it.
