The recent study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The researchers randomly assigned 609 nondiabetic overweight adults age 18 to 50 to the low-fat or low-carb diet.
At the end of the study, people in both groups were found to have lost about the same amount of weight: 13 pounds, on average.
But precise rules regulating the quantities of carbs or fat the participants ate were put in place for only the first two weeks of the study, making it hard to measure actual quantities of carbs or fat consumed.
Plus, the participants were given other guidance on what to eat that could have played a large role in the outcomes the researchers observed.

All the participants were given two additional instructions on how to eat. First, they were told to "maximise vegetable intake" by eating lots more foods like bell peppers, kale, and collard greens, all of which have been linked to positive outcomes like weight loss and a reduced risk of disease.
Second, they were instructed to curb their intake of added sugars and refined flours, ingredients that studies have increasingly tied to a variety of negative health outcomes, including weight gain and diabetes. These ingredients make up the vast majority of carbs in American diets. Beyond obvious carb-heavy items like bagels and rice, sugar and carbs lurk in an array of seemingly healthy foods like salad dressings, yogurt, sauces, and supposedly "light" ice creams.
A growing body of evidence suggests that eating fewer refined carbs and more vegetables is helpful not just for losing weight and keeping it off but also for reducing your risk of several major diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.
"Added sugars and refined grains are consistently singled out by health professionals from across all sectors, and by proponents of every diet type I can think of as being the lowest quality contributors to the human diet, and the first place to go when eliminating calories from daily intake," Christopher Gardner, a professor of Medicine at Stanford University and the lead author on the latest paper, told Business Insider.
Participants in both studies ended up eating roughly the same amount of protein each day. That's unsurprising, given that protein-rich foods like eggs, fish, avocados, and beans fill us up and keep us full, making us less likely to over-indulge on such items.
The bigger takeaway from the study, then, seems to be that any eating program that curbs your intake of refined carbs and added sugars while prioritising vegetables, proteins, and whole grains can help you lose weight.

If you'd said 9 months go that I could go 24 hours without eating anything I would have just laughed. Now, it's something I do pretty much daily - effortlesly.
In July/August I decided to do a 28 day water only fast (to get the fat removal rolling). Now,it's high fat (Kerrygold butter, double cream, lard, cheese, eggs etc), low protein (love bacon and cheese
) and very low carbs (from natural foods - not bread etc).
It keeps me satiated for 24 hours and keeps the waistline in check. Look up Ketogenic diet and Intermittent fasting and watch the fat drop off.

I eat a high fat, high protein diet to keep my hormone levels up and have adequate protein to add quality weight. I keep carbs to a minimum, but eat them around my workouts for energy. The diet helps boost my metabolism which helps me get bigger while minimizing fat gains. Being an athlete and active daily helps with that as well.

I've been keto-adapted for 3 years, and will never go back to carbs. To be sure though, this is not meat-only (although I do consume meat every day--despite what some health experts say...); rather, it's low carb, high fat, and moderate protein. No more bread, cereal, pasta, rice, grains. Period. No more alcohol, and sugary starchy foods.
I can't advocate strongly enough for keto. Weight loss is just the beginning! Mental clarity and improved mental disposition, reduced recovery time from weight lifting, better sleep, elimination of chronic inflammation, improved cholesterol and overall improved bio-markers are all added benefits to being in nutritional ketosis.KEEP CALM and JELQ ON
Goal: BPEL 7.50"; EG 6.00"
Current: BPEL 6.5"; EG 5.25"
Starting: BPEL 5.75" EG: 4.625"

Everyone's experience is going to be different and the best option is to try multiple things and find what works for your body. There are genetic and environmental factors that will hinder or accelerate weight loss.
2009/2010 I started Atkins way of eating and lifestyle, in 18 months I had lost 120lbs. Over the past 3 years, this included moving far away from home/family, educational stress, relationship stress etc, I uncontrollably gained 60lbs. Trying to get back on track and it has definitely been a trying task with lots of failures.
I am going to continue to get back to low carb way of life because it worked for me in the past.
I am not sure if this is okay but I ran across a woman this past weekend who was a promoter for pruvit a powder that is added to water, coffee, or milk to help your body get into ketosis for the day to burn fat for energy. Basically, it tries to get your body into Ketosis in one day whereas Atkins will take your body 2 weeks to get to. Ever heard of it? Just want some opinions. It is expensive but its very tasty. I purchased a 10-day pack and ever flavor has been tolerable.
