  • Hypothermia and improved erectile function/reducing edema

I just read the initial abstract to this study, and I stumbled on it by looking up the process of icing injuries (icing injured foot now). Will try find some time to read the full article when I hunt it down, but here is the abstract:

When we get injured the body has methods or cascades if you'd like that once the injury occurs further injury keeps occurring. In other words once the tissue is damaged it seems that area gets pisses and tissue continues to breakdown until the body get right itself again. That's why when you sprain an ankle you keep it cold for at least 24 hours to slow the body cascade that damages tissue and then you make it warm so now that the bad stuff stopped the body can now bring in things to repair the injury and the more blood the more repair factors and heat brings more blood.
I don't know if the little injury we cause with pe would really benefit from prolonged, and it must be prolonged to have any good effect, exposure to cold. Interesting.

I can't seem to find a way of getting the article through my typical means. Looks like you have to pay for it.

Obviously icing our penises for long periods of time would be a very stupid idea, but perhaps there may be something to icing them briefly or for a designated "safe" time after an intense workout. 10 minutes or something. I know people have practised the ice-cool down method before but I have not heard of any theory behind it or if it would actually do anything.

Thanks for your input Cusp. My foot is responding better after a few hours of ice on it, so I take your point of long durations are required for icing in order to reduce inflammation. The periods of time that would be safe to ice our dicks may not have much of a beneficial effect you think?

I was interested in what the abstract indicates in relation to the benefits of hypothermia to the pelvic floor specifically, improving incontinence and erectile functioning, albeit from post surgery. It might well serve to be a beneficial possibility to those suffering physical erectile dysfunction, but again this would have to be looked into further by some of our medical'y - science'y guys here. Just thought it might be an interesting thing to follow up on, as the forum seems to pioneer a lot of things in male sexual health.

This reminds me of cold therapy, when you lower you body temp, you signal your thyroid to produce more good stuff… just wondering if this has some similar mechanics to it.

I have a thread in the device section about this. The thread is about how ice actually improves flexibility better than heat. the cold actually incresase vasodilation to the smooth muscle, allowing for more relaxation of the smooth muscle . Which we all know no smooth muscles relaxation is what causes erections. It has more info and links to the study's explaining it all.

Here is a great article that was shared at thunder's by kdong (

Look at page 71 , the summary. Basically low duration combined with heat and followed by a cool down leads to permanent lengthening, high force and short duration is mostly about elastic properties.
The question is what is cool down . Returning to normal temperature after using heat could be enough of a cool down (no?).
So to give an example you would use something to heat the pen while extending, hanging, or clamped edging (you'll use heat at some point!) , and then removing it a while before the set ends . That should work better.
Using ice vs heat after a set has been discussed.
I think there's much more to these ideas compared to the attention they get.
