I use a mattress. But it is only a queen sized one, well that or a small strip of cloth.

I bought a cheap $3 dollar mouse pad from wal-mart and cut it into strips to use with my clamp.

I don't use anything under my cable clamp, but I did sand the inside edges to make them nice, smooth and rounded
