Ok, I was waiting to post on this, but decided to share my experience. I have had a lot of various sports related injuries and thus have a decent amount of joint pain for my age. Well I decided to add glucosamine and chondroitin to my supp routine to help with this, and possibly PE. Well I have had excellent results about 1" in length, and .5" in girth the past few months along with 1-3" in flaccid length (now a constant 6"). Now keep in mind these are partial regains but they are still very promising. This is a dissenting view to most people on these supps (for PE) and that is why I suggest them for hard gainers, and plateaued people; as if I am an anomaly you would not lose anytime by trying this. From my research the mechanism of action of these supps may actually help possibly in the extreme for some people.
It would appear that they may cause three things to occur, an increase of fluid uptake in cartilage, synthesis of cartilage proteins/cartilage growth, and prevention of cartilage degradation. From what I have seen on the PE boards is that people think these supps increase toughness of cartilage. None of the suspected mechanisms suggest that. Instead to me it suggests that the cartilage would be healthy, easier to heal, more pliable and quicker to grow. To me this would appear to allow us more exercise time with shorter rest periods. Basically clinical studies are undecided with some showing significant improvement while other showing no improvement for Osteoarthritis, sorry no PE studies were done .
A last note, these supps take a fairly long time to reach effectiveness at almost 8 weeks. In addition most companies recommend a loading phase of 2-4 weeks. So if you decide to add them, follow the directions and give them 6-8 weeks before modifying your routine. In addition please do not exceed the loading amount for a daily dosage. These supps may be hard on your liver, kidneys, pancreas, or blood sugar when taken in excess. However, there has been no link to any problems when taken at the recommended levels just suspected bio-activity. Lastly buy the generic as it is a lot cheaper, and these do contain shellfish.
I will post my routine if desired at a later time, but it is time intensive.
