I am curious if anybody has experienced this? I was having a cold for the past week and a half and I decided to use some over the counter medicine, mucinex(the kind with just guaifenesin), to clear up my sinuses. I noticed that I was able to last significantly longer than usual.
I consistenly do the kegels/reverse and learning to relax the proper areas etc., which have benefited to a certain degree. But these times after starting the guaifenesin and relaxing during, it was almost like having to focus on making it happen at the end.
I checked google to see any connections. I found some instances of people noting this from taking the guaifenesin, but a lot of them were taking combo medications that had the guaifenesin either mixed with dextromethorphan or pseudoephedrine. Both I read can affect orgasm/ejaculation. One or two noted that they were taking straight guaifenesin.
This website, Use of guaifenesin in the treatment of urologic disorders - Bush, Irving M., talks about guaifenesin potentially being used for urogenital problems including prostatitis and decreased liquefaction of semen among other things. Both things that I have suspected to be a problem for me, especially the decreased liquefaction of semen. I noticed that it often comes out yellow and in clumps. All doctors I consulted have tested me as normal in terms of having no bacterial infection with no swelling etc. even with the symptoms that I tell them.
Also guaifenesin seems to be used for male fertility treatments to thin out the semen.
So my assumption is that maybe some cases of premature ejaculation are caused by some type of either lymph, mucus, or semen stagnation within the pelvic region causing some irritation of the nerves in that area, making them fire improperly. Which would make sense if the guaifenesin helps get rid of this congestion.
Also according to, The Role of Guaifenesin in Fibromyalgia., there seems to be a skeletal muscle relaxing property that is believed to cause the mucus releasing effect of the compound. It is significant in higher doses, so much as to be used as a horse tranquilizer in veterinary situations. So this may be what was causing the benefit to the premature ejaculation. Although if this was the primary cause, I feel like it won't be hitting the root of the problem that i'm looking for.
It seems safe definitely in the short term, likely in the long term as well. It is used pretty liberally for colds and the side effect sheet didn't seem too terrible. There are people using it in quite significant amounts over the regular dosage and daily for long periods of time to treat fibromyalgia. Also the compound was originally isolated from the wood of the guaiac tree, so it at least exists in nature and has historical use by native americans as a general remedy.
I plan to keep testing this past my cold to see if it is just a fluke. Has anyone experienced this effect with guaifenesin before?
Or is anyone with some similar symptoms interested in testing this and posting their results?
