  • Birth control

My wife and I are looking at contraception options, and I thought I'd reach out to the ladies in the gym for thoughts. My wife has never had very good luck with birth control--it seems they always make her periods worse--but we'd really like to give it another go. I saw an ad for ParaGard today--a hormone free copper IUD. Neither of us had heard of it before, so I figured it'd be worth a shot to see if any of you have any experience with it. Thanks for your help!

One word: Vasectomy! It is seriously worth it if your done having kids. I just about 1 month post op and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the votes for vasectomy, guys. It might be an option down the road, but as of right now, we still want to leave our kid-having options open.

Hey Captain. I only have experience with regular pill and the mini pill(taken while breastfeeding). I have never had an issue with either pill. My periods last only a max of 4 days, never heavy. If she's planning on taking birth control for a few years before you two plan on expanding your family, do look into an iud. There are a few different ones out there, but sadly I know/have no experience with them. I recently switched to a chewable BC pill, had been on ortho tri cyclen for many years and had been having issues with cysts forming (ouch) and this new pill helps prevent their formation, etc. But hopefully hubby will be home long enough this summer to get vasectomy done so I can come off pill for good, because our family is complete

My wife's periods can last 7-8 days, and they're usually heavy. It definitely puts a damper on our sex life, unfortunately. But she isn't cool with any of the options that supposedly eliminate your period--and I don't blame her. And the pills just mess with her too much. I think an IUD would be ideal, especially if it's hormone free, as I'd really hate for her to get one only to make things worse like the pills do. I'd like to have at least one more kid, and she's just not sure--our daughter is 6 and our son is 2, so we'll probably wait a couple more years to decide for sure. And honestly, the idea of a vasectomy makes me a bit uncomfortable, though I might consider it down the road.

I'm still not considering this at present, but I have to say that I'm both hesitant and intrigued for if/when the time comes in the future. I've heard of complications from vasectomies. But it seems so common to have done, that I don't see how these could be very serious. What were your experiences? And what is the procedure and recovery process like?

During the operation I felt tugging on my testy, post op not so bad, don't think you can just get up and go. I did feel well enough after 3rd day I went to work even thou I had it planned off. But I pushed it to much and ripped a few stiches, wasnt bad but should have taken it easier. Just in fact had my last consult this am and I'm clear to shoot. Seriously worth it!

                    My journey starting at 16

16-20 yrs old - Pill..Tried every brand under the sun! I was a mess. Mood swings, bad periods weight swings etc.
3 months of my 20th year-The patch on my belly....OMG get this fucking thing off of me....

20-35 yrs old - Depo Prevera....AWESOME!!!!!! No mood swings, no weight gain, no periods, so sore boobs. I was in control of ME! After being on it for so long I realizing since I have no kids the chances for breast cancer and uterine cancer were increasing annually. So I stopped taking it. My body had a fit, migraines, nausea hot flashes etc. I went back on it for awhile because the withdrawals were killing me.

35-36 - Nuvaring Mood swings, weight gain etc. HATED IT!

37 -39 - Nothing....condom or pullout. Started asking my husband to consider a vasectomy He was adamantly opposed. I told him I was tired of poisoning my body. My mother has a hysterectomy at 38 and to lumps removed(breast). My sister had two lumps removed (breast) I would get my tubes tied if I could afford it I told him.

I was 39 in February 2012 - VASECTOMY! He wanted sex 2 hrs after! We did and it was awesome. We used a condom because the doctor said the sperm is still their for weeks later depending on how many times you ejaculate. They wanted a minimum at 20 ejaculations and two samples tested before they deemed him sperm free.

We wanted to get to 20 ASAP! The only regret we have is having sex two hours after even though they advised against it. What happened is the anesthetic wore off and he was hurting. Thank God for frozen peas! Also his Caucasian nuts were as dark as raisins.

2012 was the best year of our lives...SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX everywhere. His dick is bigger and harder than it has ever been. NO negative side effect other than he was worn out last year. He even said, "your right dear, I should have done this a long time ago." heh heh.

Don't you just hate telling your spouse they are right?

Every woman is different and will respond differently to each of the above listed birth control options. Good luck

My Wife had miserable periods. I felt so bad for her. We've been together since we were 16. Her Dr said BC Pills would help and they did so tremendously. She has to take them or she's in misery 6 days a month. 35 yrs later and she's had no ill effects. If not for the pill, I would have gotten snipped. I left the choice to her.

The doctor grabs your ball sack with his meat hooks, numbs you up and goes in a snips your vas deferens.........and then cauterizes both ends. You have to lay back for a couple of days and limit your physical activity and keep a bag of frozen peas or corn handy to put on the area to keep the swelling down. You can go about your normal, daily routine (with the exception of working out.....or at least no working out your legs). And when the area starts to bug, you lie down, put the frozen veggies on your ball sack and lay back and watch Jerry Springer......lol....at least that's what I did.....

The best and cheapest birth control hands down is a Vasectomy. I am getting mine very soon. Just do it and have care-free, frequent sex for the rest of you life. Good luck.

That's why I did it.........my gf can't have kids and I had a vasectomy 12 years ago so there's absolutely no birth control at all for us.....and NO condoms :-)

Don't delay, or you will pay. This is exactly what my husband told me after two children. Then we had two more-and the rest is history.
