  • Weightloss and motivation... Supporting each other.

So some of us wants to loose a bit (or a lot) of weigth. How about using this thread to chat about:
    1. healthy eating habits
    2. weightloss
    3. the affect of loosing weigth on PE gains.

If there is already a thread like this one please direct me to it.

I have lost 10 kilos on a low GI healthier eating routine, but started straying the last couple of weeks. So as from today I am monitoring what I am eating.

    My stats:
Age: 51 (you dont need to share that if you dont want)
Current weigth: 108 kg (237.60 pounds)
    Length: 1. 78 m (5 feet 10)
    Body type: Big boned
    Goals:
    • To control my morning blood sugar levels to be in the normal range
    • Start exercising by walking 3 kilometers 3 to 4 times a week
    • Ideal weight goal - 95 kg

Had a cortizone injection in my back yesterday so my blood sugar went crazy. Luckily I knew that. So for the next couple of days I follow a high protein, fiber and low carbs eating pattern. I hate the word diet. Media ans society has turned it into a word I associate with.. YOU MAY NOT EAT THIS OR THAT! It is forbidden...

All food is good in a way. Some are just better than others because of their nutritional value and medicinal benefits to the body. I believe you can eat the 'bad foods' BUT in moderation.

Low GI is not good for people with Glucose regulation problems. What is needed is low carbs (80-150 grams per day). Low GI carbs are still carbs.
Look into LCHF, Primal, or Paleo lifestyles. I have adopted this way of eating and lost weight and took back control of my glucose regulation.

High carb and sugar consumption is what is causing the obesity epidemic and not high fat.

Thanks for your advice. Much appreciated. I will look into LCHF, Primal, or Paleo lifestyles.

What I found working for me, with regards to low GI fiber rich carbs, is that it stays longer in the stomach hence there is a slower and steady release of glucose into the bloodstream. I am just eating dinner (a bit late) consisting of salad greens, tomatoes and barbecued chicken shish kebab. Delicous.

I totally agree with you that high processed carb and sugar consumption is what causes the obesity epidemic and not high fat. I am am an advocate of omega 3 oils and olive oil instead of saturrated fats for frying and preparing food. However, I still do like a bit of animal fat on my meat. If I fry food I always use small countities of olive oil.

Started today with phase 1 of the South Beach diet. Going to do this for a week and then go to phase 2 and eat sensibly. Want to get rid of a couple of fat rolls around my tummy.

Lemon water, it encourages weight loss.

Squeeze a whole lemon's worth of juice inside water, drink this mixture 2 times a day.

            You'll see results.

No problem, it also comes with loads of more benefits. But weight loss is just one of them.

About 4 years ago I combined the south beach diet with working out for 2 hours per day. I also got at least 10 minutes of full-body sunlight per day (I did wear a pair of shorts). I also took a few supplements.... end result? I lost 40lbs and dropped from 230lbs to 190lbs with visible abs (for me, 190lbs is not too far off my ideal weight; it puts me under 10% bodyfat, which is not too bad).

Anyway, the south beach diet can work wonders; its just easy to regain the weight once you lose it (be careful of that).

Good luck with your diet--if you want it badly enough, you'll find a way to reach your goal

Thanks for your advice, contribution and motivation. You lost a lot of weigth on this diet. I am walking 2 kilometers a day at the moment. I am a bit unfit and will increase the amount of walking. I am planning to switch over to a combination of low GI and paleo life style diet once I reach my ideal weigth.

Be careful with the South Beach Diet. You will lose weight but it will set you up for long term health troubles. It is too high protein and too low on fat.
Here is a good article to read.

                        Hi Roamer,

Thanks for the advice and article.

I am planning to do phase 1 for a week. I know my body will go into ketosis as a result of witholding carbs. I am also aware of the dangers of ketosis, hence my initial week on phase 1.

I will introduce carbs back into my diet after a week but will go for low GI carb choices such as basmati and brown rice; wholeweat bread etc, during phase 2.

I will read though the article later on tonight.

I think walking is not an excercise, it's a normal activity of the human. if you don't have health problems maybe you could train with a pair of dumbbells, push ups, sit ups, etc... and start a cardio routine (all this with common sense). but it's just my opinion, anyways, good luck man you can do this!!

Thanks for the advice and support. I am so unfit I want to take it slowly. I am thinking of using the threadmill and cross country skier in the gym at work to work to do some cardiovascular exercises for about 30 minutes after stretching, situps etc.

Why not try the elliptical as cardio? Easy on the joints, and you can increase accordingly?
