If they feel better about circumstances and events that they have no control over.
That's what prayer is really about.

If you actually believe that a supreme omnipotent being has created the universe and has a master plan, then the concept of prayer is ridiculous.

It's the height of arrogance to believe "God" has a grand master plan, but maybe things would be a bit better if he just took the "suggestions" in my prayers.

The other interpretation would be that God makes us suffer because he gets his jollies from eliciting prayers for respite, like a bully giving Indian burns in the school yard till you cry uncle.
Such a deity is not worthy of worship.
    How did I get here?

Well I was looking for Pygmy.com (I gotta thing for small people, so what), and ended up here.
And I've been here ever since.

I pray for my dick to get bigger.

      Does that count?

        You know what they say:

Pray in one hand, PE in the other. See what gets filled first.

I'm with Ravenously. My God/Supremebeing works under a Master Plan and doesn't respond to requests and petitions.

Well. This is depressing. So sad for some of you. But it's ok. God has a plan for everyone. I hope His for you is a happy pain free one. I pray it's so.
A prayer, is kinda the same as a "Like". If there are enough likes, God will take notice. So "Like" away please. My daughter needs your prayers. Thank You.

That's the thing with that thinking. Everyone has to hope the plan isn't filled with a step by step dance lesson of misery from God or whatever rules this universe. If that person has that life filled with misery and woe what can they do then? Is it the deity doing it or can the actually make their life better? If the plan is filled with terrible things would it be going against the plan and be bad in the eyes of the religion?

I'm not making fun, I'm legitimately asking questions.

The way I see it (tho I'm an atheist) God gives us free will so we could chose to truly love him.

Now free will gives us the opportunity to do anything we want with our lives. Good things and horrendous.

It's our path and we shouldn't waste it as it's a rather short one.
Women were created from the rib of man to be beside him, not from his head to top him, nor from his feet to be trampled by him, but from under his arm to be protected by him, near to his heart to be loved by him.

I'm a bit confused then. First you say it's God's plan, but then it's our path. If it's ours to do as we please then how can it be God's plan for what happens from our own actions. It seems to me that would be a small contradiction.

God gave us the ability to choose our path. Therefore it is our path. This is one area mybfaith totally disintegrates.

I pray more today than I did yesterday and less than I did the day before. There is definitely ups and downs in life. Thankful to be on the upswing....I think anyways.

Yes, I pray, but not very much, really. I think that's because I was raised Protestant, and attended different churches for decades while growing up. A number of years ago, I gave up on "organized religion", preferring instead to have a determination to give back or "pay it forward", through charities and goodwill toward those causes I truly believe in. The hypocrisy of organized "religion" eventually turned me off, actually.

Will my soul "graduate" to some greater existence in the "afterlife"? Maybe?, maybe NOT! It really doesn't matter to me, so long as I'm satisfied with being true to myself while I'm HERE, and can make a small difference, helping others in this life in ways that I have been fortunate enough to be able to.

I have a respect for religion, but I'm not religious and I don't pray. Ultimately I think people have a right to practice religion or not, and it comes down to the individual.

I didn't say it's God's plan what happens in our lives, I said he give us free will to make our own decisions.

                                Why?

I'm not challenging it as I don't believe, I'm just interested.
