  • The BIG Pharma thread

The BIG Pharma thread is here !

Pharmaceuticals can be pioneered, researched, developed, marketed, etc, by a variety of sources,
Private, Public (Universities for example), or Governmental Institutions.
There are copyrights, royalties, research costs, profits, overhead costs, marketing, lawyers, all kinds of costs & fees built in.

Some posts have been moved into this thread from another, to get this thread 'seeded' or started, so thanks in advance for your help & participation.

    Play nice !

I am on a blood thinner med. Starts with an "X". The first Rx was free. Go to get my refill a month later. $241.00. I don't want it. Call the Dr. and tell him I am not going to be taking them any longer. He gives me a pamphlet with two cards on it. One was for a $30.00 co-pay and the other one was for free prescription each month.

What I am saying is this. Doctors like prescribing meds because they get kick back from the Pharma companies.

No they don't get a kick back, frankly, they don't even know what the medications cost until you bring it up with them. Prices are negotiated between your insurance company and big Pharma. In fact, your actual pharmacy has no say in the matter, they simply dispense the medicine. Many times, there is a deductible that you need to satisfy before the insurance kicks in on the first purchase. Once that deductible is satisfied, your insurance will kick in on the remaining per the tiers that are set up for name brand vs generic drugs. Half my family is in the medical field and I assure you they are not getting kickbacks. They my get lunch provided by the drug rep. or maybe some trinkets, but certainly not a monetary kickback. Your doctor is merely prescribing what is best for your situation.

Then why are there drug salesmen visiting them weekly? I have been involved in these meetings. They get many kickbacks. If your relatives are not then they are poor negotiators. Ttips, meals, clothing and yes at times cash. Incentives based on amount prescribed are common.

I'm having a difficult time believing that. The part about no monetary kickbacks.

Maybe my family has ethics and morals and choose to do what is best for the patient. My father saw saw drug reps as a necessary evil to his main goal of helping his patients, and said so many times. My sister married a drug representative, so I know how the deal goes. My brother, a cardiologist, thinks much the same way. Wouldn't take a dime if it was offered. His time is better suited to spending time with his patients.

Too bad they are in the minority.

There are shady people in every profession.

Your family members are a small percentage of the good ones.

I consider some doctor offices People Mills. Just like puppy mills. They get people in and out as quickly as possible. Not really getting to know the patient. Where it hurts? How you feel? Blah blah blah. Here is a Rx. See how it does. Call us if you have any questions. Then they are off to the next patient.

Yep, runs into the billions. Thank god my brother is a billionaire. or millionaire for that fact. Truth is, he has 5 kids in college, recently divorced which strapped him and his wife got half of everything he owns and is not dating my brothers former best friend.

Pharma Reps can only influence, dine, take to a show, take to the ballgame. If you consider that monetary kickback then fine. My father, a great man, never let that influence his decisions when it came to his patients. He practiced until well into his mid 70's, was a church going man because he said it helped him deal with what he had to see everyday at work.

But, believe what you want. He was obviously on the take, as is my brother. God, there is a google answer for anything you naive people want to check up on.

My experiences don't come from Google. My experiences come from real life. They aren't limited by one or small sample size of my family either. As I said I'm glad your family was in the minority. Ethical people can be found. They are just fewer and farther between than they should be. I went on a cruise with my friend the drug company rep. Along with 400 doctors that were allowed for by said drug company. My trip was not paid for. Although he did offer to pay for mine from his ample expense account.

How long ago ago was that. I have a cousin and her husband who are big Pharma sales reps with two different companies. They can’t even give free sample anymore to docs, very few freebies either, many reps have been let go. Luckily they have survived the downsizing. Her husband has been the top salesman in my state a few years running. No perks these days.
A prayer, is kinda the same as a "Like". If there are enough likes, God will take notice. So "Like" away please. My daughter needs your prayers. Thank You.

You got me there Party. It was years ago. Sorry for speaking from the past. An error I regret. My friend got out and bought a hot springs resort. I guess the industry has changed.

No worries my brother. I used to walk out of my cardiologist office with a bag o treats, like Halloween. Viagra, Lisinopril...etc. Not anymore. Not many courting reps lurking either these days. I usually schedule my appointments just after lunch. No delivery guy bringing multiple bags of great smelling, high cal, high fat food anymore for the staff.

So has the narrative changed, or are you still calling my family money whores?
