If Trump did something illegal, then he should be prosecuted. My concern is that I do believe that anyone can be convicted of something if enough resources are focused on that goal.
Personally, I would be fine with President Pence. I rather get the feeling, however, that there are a lot of people who believe that, somehow, the second place finisher, not the V.P., would become the President, if

Trump were removed from office.
The problem that I see is that there was a very vocal group on the left that were calling for Trump's removal immediately following the election. In addition, the FBI, as represented by Comey, has admitted to leaking classified information to the press, and manipulating the legal and political system, specifically to get a Special Prosecutor investigating Trump. This is the Deep State in action and used to be the stuff of conspiracy theories but, now, it is old news. Furthermore, it is taken for granted that, if the Democrats retake the House of Representatives, Trump will be impeached for something, and the something in question does not really matter.
To all appearances, the decision to impeach the president of the United States was made in November 2016, long before any legitimate conversation took place as to why.
This sets a very dangerous precedent. The constitution does not define an impeachable offense. The Republican House did not impeach Obama for the Benghazi cover up scandal, but the could have. If the impeachment bar gets lowered, it will be very hard to raise it.

If this was done by the books why did Trump lie about it at first? If this wasn't a big deal he could have literally just went "I used my own money, the NDA is real, and that's that" instead Trump lied at every point. Why not report?
