When in Uk in the 80's i posed the question what is the purpose of a country/nation.? I got howls of ridicule the view at the time seemed to be that countries are formed by god and limitless in time . Of course the reality is that they change all the time and sometimes quickly. Europe borders have always been in flux and countries form and disipate .

Here is an interesting question if Scotland broke away would they still do the king thing and if so who would be King/Queen. For instance would they use the Stuart line?

I wouldn't imagine they would. Not from the Scottish people I've met and known. Although,in saying that, I would have said the same about their previous vote for independence and was very wrong there. I was shocked about that. Braveheart,my hole.

Like the Brexit vote its a one off thing like the independence vote was, its not best out of 3.

So just what is the EU doing on there side of the border then ? its been made a big deal when it was best left alone, any trouble stirred up will all be down to the EU sticking its nose in where its not wanted, when you really think about what would happen if was just left as it is now?

Bit like my other answer these referendums were a one off vote by the people, and just that, a one off vote , its like saying we did not like the last general election winner lets vote again, there all just a one off vote, seems a lot of people cant get that through there heads.

What is the EU doing on their side of the border? I don't follow what you are saying. Do you mean the EU side of the border is the Republic of Ireland. While "your" side of the border is Northern Ireland?

It was left alone because both countries were part of the EU. One country is leaving the EU, so they have to ensure that there is no illegal free movement of goods, people, and so forth. The reason the UK left the EU in the first place. I have yet to read an opinion that re-establishing a border in Ireland is a good idea. Nobody wants that, but that is what the whole debacle is about, trying to determine how it can be done legally and fairly. It is not a case of 'sticking their nose in'. That is a far too simplistic, and unrealistic, understanding of the situation.

Yes your right that the EU wants checks so what are they doing on the republic side, answer nothing they want the UK to do everything right, and as you say its best left as it , which is what I said, see so its back to the EU sticking there nose where its not wanted there just trying to keep things on the edge, but as you probably know that there are just to many roads to control like that problem ahs always been there, but if the EU want something done then it has to be on the republic side, if the UK ate happy to just let traffic in to the north then so be it.

Like I said its an EU problem that they just want to pass on, and sit back and let the UK do it, I think it was only last week in Brussels at a meeting with the republics head sitting there saying he did not want chickens that had been boosted up with drugs coming to the south, so if where should the checks be done?

The whole thing is being pushed to far out of what the people of the whole of Ireland want and tell the EU to shove it, its just something the EU has picked on and making a big thing out of something as you said best left alone.

Yeah, it has been a massive bargaining/threatening chip being used by the EU. They're making it as difficult as possible for the UK to leave, as I believe they want to make an example of them so other countries don't leave. I believe if the UK was self-contained on one island, i.e. no N.I., then it would have been a much smoother transition. I hope the people don't suffer as a result of the political battling.

Scottish independence obviously has always had some support the question is has it grown since brexit ?

One thing there going to miss is 350 million a week from the UK, one of the main reasons for leaving is all the shit they keep putting on the UK remember it was the UK who paid out millions to fence Calais to stop immigrant's getting to the ferry port, as they said it was out fault, but there a lot of country's who pay nothing to be in the EU, well time for them to start paying or get ou.

See its them wanting the UK to stay in the customs union is also a big sticking point, the UK needs to be free on that, if not the UK cant trade with any other country, the UK ahs been offered trade deals around the world but it has to with the UK not being in the CU.

Remember, 62% of Scots voted to remain in the UK, N.I. also wanted to remain: https://www.bbc.com/news/politics/eu_referendum/results

There were recent opinion polls in the Republic of Ireland, over 80% would vote for a United Ireland over a hard border. Similarly, there have been indications of the same in N.I., as a result of shifting demographics of previous years (i.e. more Catholics).

I haven't seen any opinion polls on Scotland but their MPs indicated that there was a wider shift to leave. And regardless of what Nowhard says, it is definitely not a one shot choice for independence. That's just ridiculous.

KITM and Pegman, I think you both should read this link your find it interesting, and by the way did read if there was another independence vote it would not be legally binding.

Well we are now closer to Brexit and there all still talking shit and the EU is putting as much shit as they can, the best one is all UK planes wanting to fly in to or over the EU must be owned by 53% outside the UK by 2020 or there be banned, they seem to forget what ever they do the UK can do, they make it sound like its a one way street with rules.
