  • Pets and advertising

Hey any of you have pets? I mean real pets. Birds and fish and dogs smaller than cats are not pets, well they're not in my book. So do you?

I've had dogs my whole life, some cats ( which I can't stand,) but mostly dogs. And no none of the pedigrees stuff. Just go to the shelter and pick out a mutt, bring it home and if you love it to death they'll love you to death. Hell even if you don't love a dog they still love you.

Cats? Different story in my humble opinion. They never really love you; they seem to tolerate you. They only get a bit nice when they want something. Sounds like some women I know. They always seem to have that "fuck off " attitude and I'm so lucky to have 3 of them now. Don't even think of asking me how I ended up with 3 cats because that raises my blood pressure.

Okay so back to my loving dog. She's great. The other night though, well boy did she have a cat attitude. I went to feed her and she had this look of disdain My guess is she looked at the can I was about to give her.. It was Alpo sirloin flavor. What she didn't want sirloin? So I put that can back in the cabinet and took out one that was filet mignon flavored Alpo. She seemed to like that better so I gave her that.
I mean I know my dog is smart but can she really tell the difference between sirloin and filet? Well animals must be that smart or else why have it on the can? If they weren't that smart than just label the can dog food.
I got curious and looked at her other cans of food. One sounded really good; homestyle country chicken with garden vegetables. Now that sounds like something I'd eat.

Now wait a minute; what is homestyle country chicken? Homestyle? It's made in some factory God knows where not in anyone's home. And country chicken? As opposed to city chickens? Is there such things as city chickens? Oh and garden vegetables. Don't vegetables always grow in gardens? I'm not smart in a lot of things so if anyone wants to tell me how you grow vegetables not in a garden I'm open to your ideas.

Okay so now I'm getting serious. I went and looked at the cat food. Two cans stood out; Tuscanny chicken and chicken florentine. Sounds good huh? Sounds like something you'd see on a menu in a nice restaurant. Now if I saw those items on a menu I'd have to ask the server what each one actually was cause I don't know what they are but I guess my cats do. Really?
I went through the rest of the cat food and guess what I didn't find? We all know cats like mice and there is not one mouse flavored food. Oh here's beef, seafood pate, chicken but no mouse? Beef; did you ever see a cat try to eat a Texas longhorn? If you did you're delusional but I have seen them eat mice and small birds so if we want to be nice to cats ( and I don't know why we would) then give them their favorite flavors.

Well by this time the rum had kicked in so I started to think clearly. My pets don't know the difference between any of that stuff. They only know that it smells good and they're hungry. See for most animals it's smell, not taste that gets them. So what's with all this Tuscany chicken and sirloin flavor? It's for us stupid humans and we go for it.

Hell I've even caught myself doing it; oh Bella ( my dogs name) tonight I'm giving you sirloin flavored food. Yes I have said that to the dog thinking she'll be happy that's she's getting sirloin. WTF? All my dog is thinking at this time is shut the fuck up and open the damn can and give it to me.

This is what advertising has done to me, to us and it's only animal food. If they spend so much money to convince us that our pet will like this or that because it tastes like something we like and that they have no idea of my god what must advertising be doing to the rest of our brains. Are we getting brain washed?
I was at the market yesterday in the pet food aisle and decided to test out my theory. There was a woman picking out individual cans of cat food. I said it seems like you're really giving a lot of thought to picking out the food. She said her "Nellie" prefers certain types over others. My Lord; we are brainwashed. Her cat" prefers"! The cat will eat anything and I mean anything when it gets; hungry. We put food down for our pets and if the pet walks away we know they don't like it. Bullshit; the pet wasn't hungry enough. Leave it there long enough and when the animal gets hungry enough it will eat. Hell if we die alone in our house with our pets when they get hungry enough they'll eat us. Oh but we don't do that do we? If the pet doesn't eat well we'll throw that food away and go get a different can won't we? Funny we don't do that for our kids do we? If they don't like what's made for dinner than too damn bad.

So we know we all love our pets but next time you go buy them food think of the affect that advertising plays in what we do. If the advertising industry can get us to buy certain flavors because they appeal to us and not the pet think about what it's doing to everything else we see advertised. Are we that brainwashed and not even know it?

Okay tell me what you think about your pet, advertising or both.

Hi CUSP when I had cats I loved them and they do love us, and yes its perhaps because we feed them, and not just mice, one of our cats used to bring me his kills sit outside and meweow at us till I went down in the middle of the night and say mice mouse Willie and he would pick it and walk off, now that shows how we bonded, one of our other cats would just kill the and leave them all over the drive, mind you great for the compost heap.

Here in Greece we had cats all 3 of them, and then come our first dog and they all got on well together, even when I found a pup she got on well with them, as they was just part of the family and the cats got on with them so they do mix.

Our last dog Duke hates cats, and has killed a couple, if he could he would climb trees to get them, but he falls out, but he can get half way up olive trees its because the way there cut, there like an upturned umbrella, but there both not fussy eaters, they will eat anything, they always have a mix of tinned dog meat and pasta cooked by me with carrots and peas and has stock cubes and passata in it, even our cats had that but mashed up with cat or dog food used to give them pate which they loved.

My dogs do get when I can get fresh scraps of meat from the butchers in Kalamata market this I cook up in passata and stock cubes comes out great and they love it as nay juice goes to jelly, and they love pigs skin cooked up so its like a big crunch for them, but then we get to keep the fat/dripping good for cooking with or on toast with salt and white pepper.

As for advertising we never see any as we either watch BBC news, NHK or sports, we never watch Greek TV just to much bloody ads and don't speak Greek to understand it, so been TV ad free for 12 years.

    Any help then?

JonPop liked his cats. I think he liked the challenge of their personalities or catsonalities.

Myself, I like both cats, dogs, sheep. Bhaaa !

Wow! What brand of rum do you drink?

Okay I have 3 Cavaliers and 2 cats. The dogs aren't the brightest at times but they do have all the cavalier traits of being a super friendly companion dog. Sometimes too friendly. There have been a couple of time where they were happy to jump in a car and go with people they never met before. On the other hand they do all have their own distinct personalities.

As far as the food goes my wife buys nothing but the best for them. There is one that is very finicky as to what she will eat and my wife buys the food that she likes. Another one may act like meh, it's not my favorite but i'll choke it down if it's something she doesn't like. The third one will eat anything that hits the floor. It's best to keep your fingers out of the way when feeding her.

My wife says the cats are just as finicky and will buy only certain flavors for them. One of them is whitefish and tuna. Have you ever seen a cat catch and eat a whitefish or tuna before? The cats also have their own distinct personalities. One is very docile and friendly and the other one...well I think it has mental health issues.

We do have 6 ducks and they are and do act like pets. Lots of fun. I buy the food for them and it's much easier. One bag simply has cracked corn on the label and the other is poultry feed. Throw it in the cart, pay for it and head it out to the car. Done.

They're all finicky because we allow that. The only living creature that would voluntarily starve in the face of food was Gandhi and he's dead. When they get hungry enough they'll eat anything but it breaks our hearts to see them soo sad when they don't get what they want.

Never trust someone who's trying to sell you something. That commercial of the cool refreshing Coca-Cola on a hot day doesn't tell you about the insulin spike and ensuing havoc that drink is going to do to your body. Maybe animals go by taste/smell, and maybe they go by additional things like how they feel after they eat it. Watch a dog eat grass. They're selective. If you look below at a comparison of ingredients, you'll see some pretty big differences.

Alpo Prime Cuts Dry Dog Food

The music. Everything about it is designed to make your brain convinced that want it. For our own protection/health/etc and for those we love, it's very important we do our research and weed through all the crap. We were giving our dogs food we thought was healthy (and was, compared to some other brands) until we did a lot of research.

Must be American dog food.... never seen sirloin flavour dog food in England.

Its beef, chicken or lamb. Cats get fish, duck, salmon (tho salmon is a fish).

Ive had 3 dogs, all past now, 2 German Shepherds Rebel and Zara and a sausage dog Heidi.

I now have 2 cats, well for the past 13 years, Tom and Missy. They have never been allowed outside so they are still babies in their minds. Sit on your knee, follow you around the house type of cats. Animals should always be in pairs.

I like animals on the whole more than most humans.
Women were created from the rib of man to be beside him, not from his head to top him, nor from his feet to be trampled by him, but from under his arm to be protected by him, near to his heart to be loved by him.

Having worked in a UK pet food company that mainly makes dry and soft foods for dog and cats, the flavour mainly comes from ground down animal guts and offal same with fish flavoured foods, the flavor is fed in when the grind down the corn or wheat same with all the other ingredients, a grinder that you would not like to be in when it starts up, but then you cant as it has 3 failsafe electronic doors you have to go through to get in it.

Ever had pork chitterlings? just pork guts filled with pork guts, very tasty to eat, so its from things like this they got the idea from, makes sense better than putting in the ground as an infill at garbage sites.

We had a cat that would not eat beef flavoured foods, he would just sit there look at then look at me then look back at then back at me, funny to watch but he would not eat it, so he had to wait till the other cat in the other side of a 2 dish bowl was finished, so I could change it, bit like humans then CUSP, put good food in front of them and would say sorry not for me, my Father would never eat pasta, to him it was filthy Italian rubbish, but he did eat a very good fish Lasagna I made, and said how nice it was, we don't think he knew it was pasta and we did not tell him.

My daughter got a rescue form the SPCA. Mix of Chiuaha and Daschund. It is your dog your full responsibilty. Well you know, time goes on and things happen. Everyday when i come home from work. She, (the dog) is jumping for me to pick her up hold her for a few minutes and show some love then let her go.

You can't question the unconditional love of a dog.

My dog was such a food mongler it didn’t matter what it was. He ate it. The only thing he didn’t like was olive oil. He ate a food that was grain free. He was a fairly big dog so I got a food that helped minimize his poops. I would feed him the fish kind of the brand. But when they were out I fed him the chicken kind. It never mattered.

I had something like that once, no idea what it is.. I decided to eat my own boogers, and it worked pretty well for me. I take it from time to time, and I have no issues at all...
