Hey any of you have pets? I mean real pets. Birds and fish and dogs smaller than cats are not pets, well they're not in my book. So do you?
I've had dogs my whole life, some cats ( which I can't stand,) but mostly dogs. And no none of the pedigrees stuff. Just go to the shelter and pick out a mutt, bring it home and if you love it to death they'll love you to death. Hell even if you don't love a dog they still love you.
Cats? Different story in my humble opinion. They never really love you; they seem to tolerate you. They only get a bit nice when they want something. Sounds like some women I know. They always seem to have that "fuck off " attitude and I'm so lucky to have 3 of them now. Don't even think of asking me how I ended up with 3 cats because that raises my blood pressure.
Okay so back to my loving dog. She's great. The other night though, well boy did she have a cat attitude. I went to feed her and she had this look of disdain My guess is she looked at the can I was about to give her.. It was Alpo sirloin flavor. What she didn't want sirloin? So I put that can back in the cabinet and took out one that was filet mignon flavored Alpo. She seemed to like that better so I gave her that.
I mean I know my dog is smart but can she really tell the difference between sirloin and filet? Well animals must be that smart or else why have it on the can? If they weren't that smart than just label the can dog food.
I got curious and looked at her other cans of food. One sounded really good; homestyle country chicken with garden vegetables. Now that sounds like something I'd eat.
Now wait a minute; what is homestyle country chicken? Homestyle? It's made in some factory God knows where not in anyone's home. And country chicken? As opposed to city chickens? Is there such things as city chickens? Oh and garden vegetables. Don't vegetables always grow in gardens? I'm not smart in a lot of things so if anyone wants to tell me how you grow vegetables not in a garden I'm open to your ideas.
Okay so now I'm getting serious. I went and looked at the cat food. Two cans stood out; Tuscanny chicken and chicken florentine. Sounds good huh? Sounds like something you'd see on a menu in a nice restaurant. Now if I saw those items on a menu I'd have to ask the server what each one actually was cause I don't know what they are but I guess my cats do. Really?
I went through the rest of the cat food and guess what I didn't find? We all know cats like mice and there is not one mouse flavored food. Oh here's beef, seafood pate, chicken but no mouse? Beef; did you ever see a cat try to eat a Texas longhorn? If you did you're delusional but I have seen them eat mice and small birds so if we want to be nice to cats ( and I don't know why we would) then give them their favorite flavors.
Well by this time the rum had kicked in so I started to think clearly. My pets don't know the difference between any of that stuff. They only know that it smells good and they're hungry. See for most animals it's smell, not taste that gets them. So what's with all this Tuscany chicken and sirloin flavor? It's for us stupid humans and we go for it.
Hell I've even caught myself doing it; oh Bella ( my dogs name) tonight I'm giving you sirloin flavored food. Yes I have said that to the dog thinking she'll be happy that's she's getting sirloin. WTF? All my dog is thinking at this time is shut the fuck up and open the damn can and give it to me.
This is what advertising has done to me, to us and it's only animal food. If they spend so much money to convince us that our pet will like this or that because it tastes like something we like and that they have no idea of my god what must advertising be doing to the rest of our brains. Are we getting brain washed?
I was at the market yesterday in the pet food aisle and decided to test out my theory. There was a woman picking out individual cans of cat food. I said it seems like you're really giving a lot of thought to picking out the food. She said her "Nellie" prefers certain types over others. My Lord; we are brainwashed. Her cat" prefers"! The cat will eat anything and I mean anything when it gets; hungry. We put food down for our pets and if the pet walks away we know they don't like it. Bullshit; the pet wasn't hungry enough. Leave it there long enough and when the animal gets hungry enough it will eat. Hell if we die alone in our house with our pets when they get hungry enough they'll eat us. Oh but we don't do that do we? If the pet doesn't eat well we'll throw that food away and go get a different can won't we? Funny we don't do that for our kids do we? If they don't like what's made for dinner than too damn bad.
So we know we all love our pets but next time you go buy them food think of the affect that advertising plays in what we do. If the advertising industry can get us to buy certain flavors because they appeal to us and not the pet think about what it's doing to everything else we see advertised. Are we that brainwashed and not even know it?
Okay tell me what you think about your pet, advertising or both.
