Checking Wikipedia, 19% of the 3,711 on board tested positive and 12 of them died. Pretty sure they were all elderly. Not that it's good that elderly are so vulnerable - just that knowing that there was a confined group of people (if you've been on a cruise ship, you know how easy it is to spread germs around) and relatively few caught the virus and those who succumbed had other issues, puts it in context and definitely suggests that early reported predictions were over-estimates.

Where? Again... the study out of Germany with .4% fatality rate.

Her only contact with the outside world is by means of a Bluetooth enabled cell phone and limited use of a lap top computer because of lack of mobility.

She was very social and had an extensive following of friends who visited her regularly several times a week. Thankfully, she has not contracted Covid-19; however, her life has been significantly affected by it.
This will sadly shorten her life as it will many others. They will not be counted in the daily covid death count. Nor will those who commit suicide over this. Calls to suicide prevention hotlines are up more than 400%. The deaths from drug overdoses and alcoholism won't be counted either.
The old, living alone that normally could provide for themselves well their deaths won't be reported either. I have two very old neighbors both living along with no nearby family. Something in my head a while back told me to go see how they were. Both had little or no food. They are frightened and will not go out. They won't even open the door for me; we talk through the storm door. I now go 3 times a week and get what they need and leave it by their door.

How many have no one too look out for them and are too frightened to leave their homes? They have no computers; hey know not of food home delivery. That was not part of their world but the media makes them think that going out is deadly.
Can you tell me the number of children who may succumb to another disease simply from malnutrition? For many kids in this country school lunch is there only good meal and they're not getting that are they? Then they go home to a house where everyone is out of work and has no money. Funny since kids are rarely affected by this virus maybe it would have been better for them to actually be in school.
No sadly we will look at the covid death rate and say how sad. Maybe we'll lose 50,000 people due to the virus. The hundreds of thousands of lives we lost over the hype and hysteria well they simply don't count do they?

So the Diamond princess had 700 odd patients and 12 deaths just under 2% other cruise ships a bit more .
So they tended to be older ,they got first world non overwhelmed top medical care . Please supply link to this german study . Nothing I have seen indicates a death rate under 1%. Of course it is low in young people with no medical issues . However we are talking overall death rate .

It just seems the US is not handling this very well , which I predicted .
They should have got a better response going if they had looked at overseas practise . The Premier in my home state for instance has set up the care army to help people who are struggling with anything from shoping up.
The Feds have set up a social welfare net during this so people out of work will not suffer .
The US seems to have long term structural issues with poverty many who travel there from first world countries are shocked .

It's an hysteria - people are equating the situation to some kind of post-nuclear cinema or something!
I just went to the gas station to get some beer. I was wearing the stylish cloth mask my mom made for me out of an old Grateful Dead bandana we had laying around. Two or three other folks were wearing no protection whatsoever, while another person had on a mask, gloves and some goggles that looked like they came out of my son's science kit. I still push back against the notion "we're all" acting as though "everyone" is radioactive. Anectodotes exist that prove every point, and as I've stated on this thread before, people's behavior (and the severity of the situation) varies widely across the country.

I'm choosing to take reasonable precautions to protect myself and others around me, and feeling very grateful my income is not currently in jeopardy. I do believe the situation would be much worse if we were all carrying on as if the thing wasn't happening or that one day soon it will magically disappear.

That's his first article. I believe there are two more recent ones for anyone interested, just search google for "The Hammer and the Dance Medium"

              • I still wear nothing in public, but I hardly go anywhere. Okay, okay, I wear clothes in public.

This week I'm making a DIY respirator. The cloth "wanna-be" surgical masks help with not spreading the virus, but not with not catching it. So basically the only way it's beneficial is if you have the virus, which is why the gov suggests everyone wear one, regardless. I suggest a respirator, because not everyone listens.

                • Ok just found the German study which is from a small town near the dutch border . The authors caution against extrapolating the results to the rest of Germany . There are also a number of presumptions built into it of concern notably the accuracy of tests picking up antibodies for covid in people who have had no symptoms .

Just on a general note the german medical system seems to have been very good at keeping people with covid alive .
This might be part of it .

But perhaps what has contributed to Germany’s low death rate most is an ace up its sleeve that many other countries can’t match: An extremely high bed-to-person ratio. According to data from HealthSystemTracker, Germany has 8.1 hospital beds per 1,000 people and 6.1 ICU beds per 1,000 people. Italy has 3.2 hospital beds per 1,000 and 2.6 ICU beds per 1,000. The US has 2.8 hospital beds per 1,000 and 2.4 ICU beds per 1,000 people.
“Germany hospital capacity surpasses that of many other countries,” Kates said. It’s been a key factor in saving lives and not overwhelming a strained healthcare system.

                    • Out of boredom, I have been dividing the number of deaths into the number of cases in various countries, including the U.S. I thought for a while that countries like Italy with limited resources for their huge number of cases might be the exception to the rule; but it seems that here and elsewhere, about one out of twenty-five cases succumbs. Of course, these are reported cases, and I guess the U.S. does not include senior facilities. Folks in this country tend to dump their aging loved ones in these facilities as opposed to other countries where they are kept at home. We Americans truly are retarded in many ways. It isn't just our president.

Just imagine in the US, for example, if $2T (and growing) was applied to addressing the actual issue and not the issues created in response to it.

Somehow I don't think any country can afford to spend trillion just to address the actual issue. Seems them damn issues keep popping up every couple of years.

                              • As mentioned in an earlier post, my 65 yo sister-in-law was admitted to (not dumped) a nursing home because she suffers with MS and is incapable of going to the bathroom without special equipment.

We received notice today that one of the other patients has tested positive for Covid-19.
