Lately it has been suggested that wearing masks is very widespread in these countries and that is a factor.
Yep, central planning and generally more authoritarian gov't structure makes it easier to shut things down quickly when needed. And also, it is definitely more socially acceptable to wear masks, almost normal. A buddy I work with has a girlfriend/roommate who is from China and who frequently travels there. It's pretty normal to see people wearing masks in public all the time, so more people wearing masks due to something like this would be no big deal, whereas here in the States, and in the West more generally, seeing one person with a mask on is sort of unsettling.

Apps for CCW and/or background checks aren't froze, but some counties are stopping the sale of guns, while other stores are on the verge of being closed.

They want to stop "panic buying" of guns.

      • Trying to see the positive there will be fewer mass shootings in the US since large gathering are banned .
On the other hand one wonders how many will shoot each other over toilet paper .

        • Seems at this rate everyone should have enough toilet paper lol

Not to mention, wearing a mask in public is a crime in many cities

            • I am in favor of wearing something over your nose & mouth, when outdoors.
Minimize "sending & receiving" of virus.
This is just a short term measure. If conditions can be stabilized, that will help.

Entering a bank with one on could cause issues

There aren't that many murders in the US per capita. The US is ranked approx. 40th percentile (roughly in the middle) in the world for murder per 100,000 citizens. There are way bigger problems than "mass shootings" here. Rifle deaths account for about 2% of all murders whereas handguns are over 50%. and FYI stabbings killed about 5x as many as rifles in the US last year. Also, London had more murders than NYC last year and they don't have guns.

                  Guns aren't the problem.

How is a handgun not a gun ?
So I will look it up but last time I looked US had far higher murder rate than advanced countries so talking places like Germany , UK, Aussie etc not places like Afghanistan , Iran ,Syria .

What the overall effect will be short term I don't know but medium and long term I don't see it as positive.

Yep. we're looking at the same numbers. PER capita its not that high. Guns aren't going anywhere in the US and rightfully so, because its a non-issue. Over 80% of gun homicides are gang on gang violence and grossly inflate our numbers. Nobody gives a shit if a gang member kills another one. Its a nice way of them cleaning up their own mess. Good riddance to those turds.

We are not going to convince each other on this issue. Back to the COVID. I digress.
