  • Western values

Hmm so things like democracy ,freedom of speech and the like . In recent years we could add womens rights and some things like that . Anyone want to make a list?

Anyway it seems to me that this concept has spread in Eastern Europe but there has been some push back.
So Ukraine wanted to join the west but elements within and without didn't like that at all. Russia seems intent on not joining the west. I don't really understand why; any ideas?
Western values in general don't seem to have taken root in the Muslim world . A fanatic might join Isis, but what is a moderate ?

      Interesting topic, Peg.
In my view, shared values define any organization, be it a club, a family, a company, a country, or a culture. Furthermore, those values must be prioritized. For example, most cultures value human life but some are much more willing to take it than others.
In the case of Russia, they seem to value national security much higher than most of "The West" although, obviously, national security is a priority for every nation. Nations that embrace freedom of speech value that freedom above whatever incremental increase in risk to national security it embodies.

Well, based on the fact that a group can start protesting for rights to marry a goat, and a judicial system that allow those changes for the whole society, is a sign in my opinion that the western values are in decadence. We can talk and argue about evolving or changing with times, being "modern", but in fact we are degenerating society.

western people could get more progressing than others, as its economics better as we know. it is the least element when we talk those topics. so in my opinion the "western value" could be good for all people. but how we could spread or apply it? those values not take root in muslim world or others, maybe because they meet different questions or situations, not like western people meet.

"Western values" is way too simplistic to bear any merit in the globalized world. It is an outdated concept to differentiate between regions. The world is way too much of a hodge-podge of beliefs, cultures, values, ideals, and systems of rule. Even within countries that you would probably define as "Western", the internal dynamics and cultures within that system may be anything but was is categorised as Western. By using the example of Russia and Ukraine perfectly exemplifies this, people still view Russia as this communist entity, while it is far from the truth. Even China is only loosely termed communist by today's standards, as it heavily promotes a capitalistic agenda.

The "Western" values you listed are also heavily skewed and only measured on terms of bias and blinkered perceptions. All of those things are simply on a sliding-scale as opposed to the "West" having them, while the "East" (or whatever silly term you want to use) has not.

I did not identify western values as a region.

Outside of the US, nationalism is much more common. Patriotism to one's nation is still considered to be a high virtue in most countries. Most other countries I have visited or lived in have more awareness of what is going on elsewhere in the world, too.

The nice thing about the US however, and one of the reasons I moved back here, is that we are one of the least racist and most awesomely diverse places that I have ever had the pleasure to live in. Everywhere else people feel more divided. It's a real shame that our media is trying to destroy this, rather than help reinforce it. When I lived in Japan and Korea, I was shocked to learn that segregation and discrimination are still very much legal!

I think our strongest value is that for the most part, as a nation we tend to truly believe that all people are deserving of equal rights, and that's what makes me proud to be an American.

As far as I can tell, western values tend to err more towards secularism and importance on freedom of speech and more general freedoms, and freedom in general, even if the politicians fail to practice what they preach eg. Patriot Act, but it's the emphasis which counts.

I think a good example to demonstrate this would be Turkey, to show the difference between western values and others. After WW1, Ataturk(considered the father of modern Turkey) preached the importance of secularism and individual freedoms, and was thus said to be embracing western values(as opposed to the Sultanate of the Ottoman empire). Though with Erdogan in the last decade, with the rollback of freedoms and increasing shunning of secularism and embracing of islam, is considered to be neglecting western values.

I think a few people are right in that there is an incompatibility of western values and others, especially within the muslim world. I also think to an extent that western values also represent what would be considered modern values, with its emphasis on advancement, whether it be through science or politics or the like.

I don't know if I would hold up Turkey as a prime example of Western values at any time . Mind you as you and others have alluded to it is all relative .

You bring up some good points.

Yeah 50/50, Turkey's a hard one, but I think a good indicator of how backwards it has become now compared to ten years ago when it could be considered westernised is the disbelief and shock shown when it was heard Merkel wanted to fast-track them into the EU compared to when there was a little push-back but not much ten years ago.

Maybe Japan would be a better example, as a country that actually went out of it's way to become westernised in the Meiji era.

I know, but my point still stands. What are these Western values you identify, who possesses them, and how do they differ from non-Western values?
