If you are stealth, you don't need speed as you have the element of surprise. I believe the F35 is also a vertical take off and landing plane similar to the Harrier. I live in a dense military area with fighter planes going overhead all the time, still fascinated, but numb to the whole thing at the same time as they are always there.

Well at the moment we have hornets and Super Hornets Which may be getting behind a bit.
For whatever reason the Air force preferred the F35 I just hope it is not further delayed .
I remember when the Air force decided on the Hornet the British guys I met thought the Uk plane of the time was what should have been picked (it was shortlisted from memory). But that was the 80's an the Uk has euro fighter and we still have Hornets.

Are the Aussies fighting the Eurofighters ? Home game or away ?
Who's on first ?
Well exactly ,who knows . Aussie f 18's are in the Middle east right now doing missions against isis just fine . Matching a modern air force would be a different matter.

Oh interesting , Aussie has 2 helicopter carriers but they are not good for conventional fixe wing aircraft , perhaps a stol airgraft would have use there.
