  • Wake up call

I'm hoping this might be of some benefit to some people here.

In the early hours of Sunday morning I was woken up by a call from my sister. I was told that my Dad had had a major heart attack. After several attempts he was successfully resuscitated but had suffered severe and permanent brain damage. Severals hours later at the hospital with no improvement we decided to turn the life support off after everyone had said their goodbyes. He was in his early 50s.

It all happened so quickly. I haven't done any PE since. I can't help but think of all the time I had spent on PE when I could've been spending it with my Dad. But I guess hindsight is always 20x20. I'm not 100% sure what I'm trying to say here. I'm not grieving too well. I'm not criticising PE, I love PE. I guess what I'm trying to say is to make sure you've properly prioritised your goals in life. Living your life to the full is important. Family and friends are important. Usually more than we know until they've gone.

    Rest in peace Dad

Please accept my sincere condolences KFH.

My old man died of a heart attack at the young age of 61. I received a call from his partner while I was at work and arrived at his house about 20 minutes later after a mad dash through the traffic. When I rushed into the room the paramedics were clearing up their gear and he was lying dead on the floor. That image will stay with me forever.

I often had the same thoughts as you back then about the fact that I should have made more of an effort to see more of him even though I had a young family at the time and was working all the hours God sends. However, now I have reached the age of 55 and have my own son who is 23 that I see once a week for a few hours at a time, I realise that he has his own life to lead and am very proud of the fine young man he has become. I am consoled by the fact that if ever I was in a time of need that he would be there for me. That's what matters the most to me, not the fact that maybe we should spend more time together but that he is always with me in spirit wherever I go and whatever I do.

I am sure your father was and is very proud of you no-matter where you are and I do believe having thoughts of regret are part of the grieving process. Allow yourself to have those feelings and try not to be too hard on yourself. Your father knew that you loved him, that's all that matters.

      Amen.
