Also not too sure how someone would see results from hydrolyzed collagen II, as your body can't do anything with it. You'd need undenatured collagen for it to ever be processed.

type II chicken collagen found in dietary supplements is denatured or hydrolized, which means that high heat and/or chemicals have been used to process it. These processes fundamentally alter the molecular structure of the protein, rendering the collagen ineffective as an immunomodulator. There are no peer-reviewed scientific studies showing that denatured type II collagen provides any joint health benefits. And in fact one study states, “denatured type II collagen has no observable effect on the incidence and severity of the disease [arthritis].”(7)

Undenatured type II collagen is made using little or no heat and very limited processing - just enough to concentrate the collagen and make it soluble. The UC·II manufacturing process ensures that the collagen remains biologically active in its most native, triple helix form, with its immunomodulating ability intact.
Nothing would prevent hydrolyzed collagen from having a placebo effect, however. So it can of course have its use, provided belief in it is strong enough.

Undenatured collagen has excellent benefits, but beef gelatin and the like in relative low doses (not as a protein replacement supplement) can have positive effects- especially when combined with Vitamin C. If not useful as an immunomodulator the amino acid profile is still of benefit.

In my own case there's also been a difference in things like hair and nail luster- something not attributable to the placebo effect. Digestion has been better too- another attribute of this supplement.

Taking Boswellia Extract too- it has helped as well.

Reading over the study all I see examined is hydrolyzed collagen, examining Type I, not Type II. Your body can absorb and use Type I and (I believe) type 3 in hydrolyzed form without issue.

In connective tissue, type I collagen ortropocollagen is the most abundant, and a sourceof partially hydrolyzed collagen (gelatin) andcollagen hydrolysate. The difference betweenthe collagen hydrolysate and gelatin is that thecollagen hydrolysate is dissolved in water or brinethus making its digestion and absorption easier, allowing the production of collagen by the bodyfrom the free amino acids.20 The most importantfeature of collagen hydrolysate is the prevalence ofglycine and proline in its composition. These aminoacids are essential for the stability and regenerationof cartilage.

According to Takeda et al.,25 type I collagenrepresents 25% of the total body protein and 80%of connective tissue in humans. The synthesis oftype I collagen also plays an important role inosteoblast differentiation, enhancing bone mineraldensity, bone mineral content and increasing theamount of type I collagen in the bone matrix.
I agree that gelatins can have a benefit. Especially for older people(sort of like DHEA). I was commenting on denatured Type II collagen supplements(which is the default for Type II unless it specifies undenatured). To my knowledge standard type II supplements do not actually offer any benefit.

I'm an older guy now so I'm probably realizing a greater benefit from it than I would have been if I were taking it in my youth

Can you take collagen at the exact same time as arginine?

Would gelatine have a similar effect?

EDIT: D'oh, I see Big Al is a few steps/years ahead of me. Great minds and all that, though.

Years ahead of the curve mate!

I'm gonna grab some gelatin on the way home from the grocery store, cheap, has the added benefit of the amino acid glycine which is lacking in most diets. It's a calming amino acid which helps you sleep. In traditional diets we'd normally get this from say bone broth. So better sleep = better recovery on top of the collagen forming benefits too.

                          Will report back later!

So is taking collagen beneficial to PE or no? Some people believe it will make gains harder to come by and some believe it has helped them gain. Any thoughts?

Also curious of the consensus on this (though I know it's always a work in progrss) from what I've read, is it helps with mailability and stretch length. So if your tunica is your limiting factor, would this then be extra beneficial?

I'm also curious and would like to know if there would be an advantage (besides cost) to Knox gelatin vs something like this https://www.costco.com/.product.100152773.html
