Air Force here.

Active duty Air Force. Been in 7 years. Been deployed to Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. Have also been TDY to Newfoundland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, Azores, Mali (Africa), Bermuda, Iceland, Israel, Washington, Nevada, Florida, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and a few other places that I can't think of right now.

never served myself and i take my hat off to anyone who does,personaly would never do it im quite happy fighting in a ring or in the street but getting dragged out bed at 2 am to go for 40 mile runs with 40kg on your back then going to war and getting shot at and bombs going off all the time aint for me ,again i take my hat off to those who do ,well done troops!!!!

Stumbled upon this forum, didn't realize that there were many vets here lol. Well, Im only 20, and had aspirations of joining the Canadian Army when I was younger but increasingly bad fitness kept me out and I lost favour. I have an uncle whos done 3 tours in Afghanistan, and my great grandfather was one of many to storm juno beach in WW2. I love reading all kinds of history and have a special place for military history. When I read the vast amounts of history regarding war and such, I cant shrug it off that many of the vets today are fighting unworthy enemies, people who hide in the crowd and blend in and only show their faces when they please, at least in WW1 and WW2, Civil War etc the enemy had the balls to show his face and face his enemy. JP, I have a question, I cant seem to find much info on it since the research I do is twofold, did the vietcong blend well in society or did they wear uniforms?

The thing I miss the most is the fellow comrades, knowing the man next to you has your back is something you don't get too often in the civilian world.

11 years active Air Force as a Russian linguist for Intel.

Army National Guard as a truck driver, Russian linguist and Signals specialist, plus an active tour in Iraq (truck driver and "sweet Jesus, they're shooting at us" specialist).

21 years, 8 months and 6 days total service.

Presidio of Monterey, CA (1 year)
Intel training, San Angelo, TX (four months)
England (three years RAF Chicksands)
Italy (two years San Vito AS),
Japan (five years Misawa AB),
Iraq/Kuwait (fifteen months activation tour -- officially Arifjan, Kuwait, but we had 1 day in-station for every 15 North of the berm)

You're an 18 or 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ Xray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 - 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.
Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.

He's coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses.

And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times..... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.

Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Freeman died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise, ID ......May God rest his soul.....

(Oh yeah, Paul Newman died that day too. I guess you knew that -- He got a lot more press than Ed Freeman.

New Direction for any war: Send Service Vets over 60!

I am over 60 and the Armed Forces thinks I'm too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 42 to join the military. They've got the whole thing ass-backwards. Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to join a military unit until you're at least 50.

For starters, researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.

Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. 'My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry.' We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for awhile.

An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10am. Old guys always get up early to pee, so what the hell. Besides, like I said, I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical son-of-a-bitch.



If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.

Boot camp would be easier for old guys.. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we're used to soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns... We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.

They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I've been in combat and never saw a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training.

Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.

An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head.

These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way.

Let us old guys track down those dirty rotten coward terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons, who know that their best years are already behind them.

HEY!! How about recruiting Women over 50...in menopause!!! You think MEN have attitudes??
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh my God!!! If nothing else, put them on border patrol. They'll have it secured the first night!

I like your new Direction for war, can't say I'd do it all over again. After the last four years of my tour of duty I hated the place I was stuck in, not a pretty place, to much blood and broken bones and death.
