      • Another workout done. I thought I would try something different by splitting up the sets a little differently, thinking that it would be easier to do smaller sets then fewer larger ones. It definitely is making me sweat right now so I guess it is working in some form. The number of reps is still where it would be if I was doing it normally.

I am wondering about this small knee pain I have been having. Well I guess pain is too much, but an ache is probably a better word and it is only when walking down the steps and in the beginning of the workout, then it goes away. No doctor for now as my insurance ran out until the beginning of next year so I guess I will just have to deal with it.

        • No workout today, everything felt a little off. I think my brother is giving me what he had, plus just enough stuff to do knock it off the list for today. At the least I made a healthy dinner with rice, chicken, and some steamed vegetables.

All of my thoughts are regurgitated information I've copied from experts in the field from the books I've read. I try to resign myself to keeping no opinion on the matter since I'm not a sports scientist and certainly no expert in the field.

                And neither are you.

I study the pros who take athletes to the olympics. Take Poliquin for example. If he says X, well I'm going to start saying X. Why? Cause he knows his shit.
What the guys that I'm studying are saying is that crunches are bad for performance, bad for your back and even bad for getting those abs they're 'designed' to get you. Crunches and all of their variations with all of their gizmos and gadgets are worthless. Don't do them.

Type in leg raise hernia into google? Okay, so don't do leg raises. Type in "man getting hit by bus when leaving his house." Okay, so never leave the house.
With every workout, there are risks. Nothing is 100% safe. Especially Squats, which are a highly technical movement. Deadlifts are much safer.
All I know is that many martial artists and gymnasts use them frequently. These guys are often the epitome of athleticism, having the body we all wish we had.
Of course, don't *only* do leg raises for the next 50 years, every single day, with 10000 reps each days without pause. Yea you might hurt yourself. Try some variations.

                • You talk about taking the high road and going to PM with our discussion (which I didn't do because I could give a $hit about that) and then you feel the need to respond 5 days later or so?

                  Nice example to set...

BTW- Everything I say can be shot down and everything you say can be shot down. One expert will tell you one way and another will tell you a different way.

                    • Still can't seem to figure out what is causing this knee ache of mine. I only feel it while walking up and down the stairs and standing up/sitting down, and sometimes it borders on the slightest of pain. I think it may have been me doing something slightly off, like those jumping jacks I did a week ago or maybe the I did something wrong with my squats, but this lasting a week has me wondering.

Should I let this heal and maybe just use my dumbbells?

                      • my two cents, for what it's worth:
Knee pain can be the result of how you're using your body. When you stand, get up, or walk up the stairs, where do you place the weight? Closer to the front of your torso, on your toes and quads? Or do you step down with your heel, feeling it in your hams and butt?
If you identify with the first, you might want to think about shifting that weight backwards a bit and activate different muscles.

It could also be the jumping jacks, yes. Jumping around can be rather shocking for the unconditioned joint.
Maybe you're also doing those squats with less than optimal form. I don't know. I can't see you.

Sit back and let it heal if you want. It never hurts to give your joints some rest. But with correct form, you shouldn't have to (unless you're using heavy weights, which is not your case)

                        • From the way I have been standing up I would definitely identify with the first. I tried standing up the way you suggested in the second and it didn't hurt so I guess that might be why.

As for form I was sort of noticing that I was standing up from a squat on the front of my foot, which is weird for some reason as I know how I should be doing them.

So I guess it is all up to bad form. I think I will give it the weekend to see how everything heals up.

                          • I think jumping jacks suck.

You jump into the air then land with your feet and knees out of line with the weight. This causes a horizontal (lateral) strain in addition to the vertical strain.

Your knee is not designed to handle a horizontal (lateral) strain so each time you do this you're stretching ligaments designed to keep your knee stable.

                            • That is pretty interesting. I only did them once, as a suggestion from my father and by this aching alone I probably won't be doing them again.
