The only thing that actually has any proven effect in them is caffeine. Any other claims that people have from the other ingredients are just placebo. The right proportion of ingredients can help you feel good and get you in the right frame of mind (when I was on pre-workouts for years I literally felt like I couldn't workout without them) but the only thing that will actually have any measurable impact is caffeine, and even that is questionable. If you need them to get yourself in the zone for working out then so be it, but they are usually really expensive and the results of studies comparing performance when on caffeine vs. a placebo is highly debatable. Most of the evidence suggests its mostly a wast of time and money and if you want the caffeine a shot of espresso or cup of coffee would be much cheaper.PEGym Theme Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH76tfDxm7Y

Ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin also makes for a nice pre workout supplement. You'll kick ass for like a week or two, but after that you lose the speedy high and withdraw is a total nightmare. You have to start up with a tiny amount of each and cycle on and off every 2 weeks.Sex is the great leveler, taste the great divider. - Pauline Kael

I personally eat 3 - 4 balanced meals a day and supplement with 2+ protein shakes a day.
I got into “Natural” body building and supplemented with Whey and Creatine. I peaked at 5’8” 205 Built Running back look and as I have posted before did not like the feeling and look. So I adjusted my training and dropped down to a ripped 180 NFL Receiver look. My body fat remains low and I have a Hydrostatic body fat test 3 – 4 times a year.
Personally I choose to ensure my body had more than enough Protein. I would rather have my body pass the excess protein that is not needed, than come up short and Protein deficient to achieve my fitness/body building goals.
Putting on 3-5lbs of fat along with 1-2lbs of muscle a month?
Smart diet along with supplementation has personally been working for me, 35+ years of training and I still sport a set of Ripped Abs.

Protein deficient? LOL. That condition does not exist with your average Joe bodybuilder. Nor is it present anywhere in America with people who are not starving.Sex is the great leveler, taste the great divider. - Pauline Kael

Gotta do what works for you, I could sit here and say 1g/day of protein is too much for even professional bodybuilders but at the same time I could say I should never drink alcohol but nobody can do every single thing 100% perfect! Find a healthy medium that allows you to get to where you want to be and it's all good!Originally posted by akaTrex View PostI personally eat 3 - 4 balanced meals a day and supplement with 2+ protein shakes a day.

Years back I got the opportunity to speak with Frank Zane for 20+ minutes and ask him his views on Training, Diet and Supplementation.
His advice works extremely well for me.“The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything” Albert Einstein

Read the book "How Much Protein" by Brad Pilon, or anything other than a fitness magazine and you'll see it for yourself. Eat whatever you want, protein needs are not as important as over all calories and exercise for building muscle and losing fat.

I measured my protein intake for breakfast. One egg (6g), raisin bran (4g) with 1% milk (9g), and low fat (1%) yogurt (8g). I didn't eat a full serving of yogurt, but I always have more than one serving of cereal and milk for sure. Either way, I'm roughly at around 30g of protein to start off my day, which would put me around halfway if I need 60g. I've got a small piece of chicken and brown rice with veggies waiting for me for lunch. Don't know what I'm doing for dinner yet. I'll drop money on snack foods, such as nuts and maybe small veggies, peanut butter, and more yogurt to stay full during the day. If I'm gonna be over on protein intake, I might as well shit and piss out actual food instead of a powder. I might try it out in the future to see how I feel, but I'd rather spend it on food right now. I'll be selling plasma for extra cash as well, so I might end up using protein powder only for that purpose if I run out of food at the end of the day. I guess they want you to eat something high in protein at least an hour before you go in. Never done it, and haven't done too much research on it yet.Start:

Thankfully I haven't looked at a fitness Mag in years. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night!

Guys - I was researching some protein powders because I was thinking about switching from Optimum to Body Fortress because BF is so much cheaper... Anyway, I found this on the web and it places BF in 20th out of 50 tested for quality and 6th out of 50 tested for value.... so I switched - so far I like it!
...Interesting to see the rankings of all the different brands! Here's the link:

In case you missed it I was talking about the bulking diet. 1-2lbs of dry muscle each month, about 10lbs a year diminishing with experience over time, and at least a couple pounds of fat if you're not careful with how many extra calories you consume.... So "bulking" in the traditional sense and not the new smart bulking technique.Sex is the great leveler, taste the great divider. - Pauline Kael

Good for you, I used to donate plasma as well. They told me to eat the equivalent of a 6 inch sub within 2 hours of coming in and I never had any problems. Just stay super hydrated!Originally posted by manram26 View PostI measured my protein intake for breakfast. One egg (6g), raisin bran (4g) with 1% milk (9g), and low fat (1%) yogurt (8g). Exactly, as you can see it's super easy to get your protein requirements in just eating a traditional healthy diet. 30 for breakfast, 30+ in the chicken, and then probably another 20 or more for dinner is a pretty average amount for a normal diet. It's easily enough, especially for someone your size. Do try to make sure you try to get about 10 grams and some carbs right after your workout though. What I do is kind of split my breakfast up by just eating a couple piece of fruit before a workout and then eating some fruit and nuts after my workout, or something along those lines. I workout in the morning always though.PEGym Theme Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH76tfDxm7Y
